So may my mother be a ransom for all of ʿAwf,

And for the sons of al-Abyad on the day of al-Darak.

They shielded me from wrong with well-aimed blows,

Rending beneath the hems of tunics,

And fingers with their tips flying off,

And hamstrings split open like spindle-whorls.
