    Indeed, Thaqif was—so admit it—

base, whenever a stronghold was raised for baseness.

And lower your eyes: glory shuns you, and its people

stand aloof because of the baseness within you.

    بِهِم عَنكُمُ حَقّاً تَناءٍ وَمَزحَلُ

    And leave Maʿadd alone, and claims of descent from them;

they are truly distant from you, and far removed.

And abandon foolish talk; turn to your forefather,

Thaqif, for moderation in this is more becoming.

For if you seek to turn away, you shall have no

refuge in Qays’s stock from your origins.

And you have no descent from Khindif,

nor firmly founded glory in the noble deeds of old.
