رفيقيـنِtwo companions قالاrested at noon خيمتِـيْthe two tents of أُمّUmm (mother of) معبَـدِMa‘bad
May God, Lord of mankind, grant His finest reward
May God, Lord of humankind, bestow His finest reward
to the two companions who rested at Umm Ma‘bad’s two tents.
on the two companions who rested at noon in Umm Ma‘bad’s two tents.
هماthe two of them نَزَلاهاlodged with her بالهُدىwith guidance واهتـدَتْand she was guided بـهِby it
فقَدْfor indeed فازَtriumphed مَنْwhoever أمْسَىbecame رَفيـقَa companion of مُحَمـدِMuhammad
They alighted there bearing true guidance, and through it she found guidance;
They lodged with her bearing guidance, and she was guided by it.
for whoever comes to be Muhammad’s companion has surely triumphed.
For whoever has become Muhammad’s companion has surely triumphed.
فَيَاso, O لقُصـيٍّQusay (called upon) مـاwhat زَوَىwithheld اللهُGod عنْكُـمُfrom you
بِهِthrough him منof فَخـارٍٍglory لاnot يُبـارَىis rivaled وَسُـؤدَدِand lordship
Alas, clan of Qusay, what God has taken from you
So, O Qusay, what God has withheld from you
with him—what matchless glory and lordly eminence!
through him—unrivaled glory and lordship!
لِيَهْنِِmay it gladden بَنِيthe sons of كَعـْبٍKa‘b مَقـامُthe dwelling of فَتاتِـهمْtheir young woman
وَمَقْعَدُهـاand her seat للمُؤمِنِيـنَfor the believers بمَـرْصَـدِat a lookout
May Banu Ka‘b rejoice in the dwelling-place of their daughter,
May the sons of Ka‘b rejoice in their young woman’s dwelling,
and her abode is a watch-post for the believers.
and in her seat at a lookout for the believers.
سَلُواask أُخْتكُمْyour sister عَنabout شاتـِهاher ewe وإنائِهـاand her vessel
فإنّكُمُfor indeed you إنْif تَسْألـواyou ask الشّـاةَthe ewe تَشْهـدِit will bear witness
Ask your sister about her ewe and her vessel;
Ask your sister about her ewe and her vessel;
for if you ask the ewe herself, she will bear witness.
for if you ask the ewe, it will bear witness.
دَعَاهَاhe asked her بشـاةٍfor a ewe حَائـلٍnot pregnant فتَحَلبـَتْthen flowed with milk
لَهُfor him بِصريحٍٍwith pure milk ضَـرّةُthe udder of الشّـاةِthe ewe مُزبِِـدِfoaming
He asked her for a barren, dry ewe—and it yielded milk
He asked her for a barren ewe; then there flowed
for him: pure milk from the ewe’s udder, all afoam.
for him, from the ewe’s udder, pure, foaming milk.
فَغَادَرَهَـاso he left it رَهْنـاًas a pledge لَدَيْهـاwith her لِحالـبٍfor a milker
يُرددُهـاhe takes it back and forth فِـيat مَصْـدرٍٍa departure from water ثُمّthen مَـوردِan arrival at water
So he left it in her keeping, a pledge for every milker
So he left it with her as a pledge for a milker
who drives her to and fro, at each departure from water and then each return to the watering-place.
who leads it back and forth, away from water and then back to it.
