Ours is a nobility rising above every summit.

فُروعُbranches تُساميvie in height with كُلَّevery نَجمٍstar مُحَلَّقِsoaring high
It stood rooted in earth's depths, then was raised aloft
by branches that rival every high-soaring star.
مُلوكٌkings وَأَبناءُand sons of المُلوكِkings كَأَنَّناas though we were

Kings and sons of kings, we are like
night-faring stars rising in the east.

When one star among them sets, there appears after it
a blazing star: whenever it appears to earth, she shines.

For each noble sire of noble sons, the mother who bore him
was nobly bred, her ancestry never sullied.

and Haritha the noble lord, or like the son of Mundhir,
and like Abu Qabus, lord of al-Khawarnaq.

Those men, not the baseborn, on every battlefield
repel the onrush of the flashing storm-cloud,

with spear-thrusts whose spray is like pregnant camels' spurting urine,
and blows that cleave heads at every crown.
أَتاناcame to us رَسولُthe Messenger of اللَهِGod لِماwhen تَجَهَّمَتscowled

The Messenger of God came to us when
the earth scowled at him, and every marksman shot at him there.
تُطَرِّدُهُdrive him away أَفناءُthe clans of قَيسٍQays وَخِندِفٍand Khindif

The clans of Qays and Khindif kept driving him away—
battalions that, if not charging into battle, raided by night.
فَكُنّاso we became لَهُfor him مِنfrom among سائِرِall of الناسِthe people مَعقِلاًa stronghold

So we, from among all people, became his stronghold,
lofty, impregnable, with towering peaks,
مُكَلَّلَةٍcrowned بِالمَشرَفِيِّwith Mashrafi swords وَبِالقَناand with spears

crowned with Mashrafi swords and with spears,
bearing every dusky weapon, blue-grey and double-edged.

With these a Khazraji host defends its land,
like the lions of Karaʾ, or the jinn of Namnaq.

An Awsi host of Malik's line lends it aid,
with slender swords like lightning-flashes, keen-edged.

طِعانٌspear-thrusting كَتَضريمِlike the kindling of الأَباءِthe reeds المُحَرَّقِset ablaze
On every day of battle, blame was kept from us
by spear-thrusts like the blazing of reeds set alight,
وَإِكرامُناand our honoring أَضيافُناour guests وَوَفاؤُناand our keeping faith
بِماwith whatever كانَwas مِنof إِلٍّa covenant عَلَيناbinding upon us وَمَوثِقِand a solemn pledge
and by our honoring our guests and keeping faith
with every covenant and solemn pledge binding upon us.
فَنَحنُso we are وُلاةُthe rulers of الناسِthe people فيin كُلِّevery مَوطِنٍplace
مَتىwhen ماever نَقُلwe utter فيamong الناسِthe people قَولاًa word نُصَدَّقِwe are believed
So we are the rulers of men in every place;
whenever we utter a word among the people, we are believed.
تُوَفَّقُare rightly guided فيin أَحكامِناour judgments حُكَماؤُناour sages

Our sages are rightly guided in our judgments,
when others in such matters are not rightly guided.
