Jubayr wished to be chief, just as one hoped

for youth's return—a man bereft of reason and bereaved of a child.

And before him, it had eluded his father, who remained

in his conceit until he died impoverished.

So leave the noblemen's pursuits alone, for

your father is merely Adi; so consider how you will act.

And do not, Jubayr, aspire to the endeavors of the

noblemen, when Nawfal has not established honor for you.

And you are born of a bald-naped Marini woman,

and have no forebear in preeminent glory.

For your father has been outstripped in ancestral glory by

Abu al-Miswar, the protector, and your glory is lower.
