Amrah has, in al-Batha, between Mu'arrif

and Natah, a dwelling and gathering places.

By my life, a tribe between Muzahim's dwelling

and al-Jutha, whose residents need not toil on journeys,

and an encamped tribe whose herds are not hurried away,

with supporting clans beyond the farthest reaches—

when told one day, “Depart! You have been attacked!”

they stay, and no camels are brought to them—

have greater claim to her than youths and riding camels,

lean, bent-legged beasts that traverse the night away from her.

She says, shedding tears from her fair face:

“Perhaps you will claim my soul before your own.”

Persia's patrician gave her free range in a hollow,

with herbs and flowering growth from the Golan's heights.

She grazes in spring in Ghassan, along Muhbil's margins,

to al-Harith of the Golan, her plumpness plain to see.

Then I brought her up for saddling, as though she were

a startled male ostrich in al-Samawah.

I led her to water, but she drank nothing there,

save that her lips had been wetted.

Then I led her away from water; at dawn there wandered

from the thicket one in two worn wraps, his gear weighing him down.

She spent the night, and water lay beneath her neck,

a trace at her breast from the pool's water.

She pressed on through a night's journey, then halted to rest

at Yathrib, among nomadic and settled Bedouins.
