قَدalready أَصبَحَhas become القَلبُthe heart عَنهاfrom her كادَnearly يَصرِفُهُturns it away
عَنهاfrom her تَتَرُّعُrashness قَولٍof speech غَيَّرَchanged الشَعَراthe hair
My heart has now all but been turned away from her—
The heart has almost turned away from her
away from her by rash speech that has turned my hair gray.
Words that changed poetry pour from her
ياO زَيدُZayd ياO سَيِّدَchief of النَجّارِal-Najjar إِنَّindeed لِماconcerning what

O Zayd, O chief of al-Najjar, indeed, concerning what
O Zayd, O chief carpenter, there is news
your people have done to Uthman, I have news.
Of what your people did to Uthman
وَإِنَّand indeed ليfor me حاجَةًa need ياO زَيدُZayd أَذكُرُهاI mention it
لَمnot أَقضِI fulfill مِنهاof it إِلىuntil ماwhat time? قَومِناour people وَطَراa desire
And I have a need, O Zayd, which I mention—
And O Zayd I have a need to mention
I have not fulfilled that desire—how long, our people?
I have not fulfilled it though our people wandered
إِنّيindeed I أَرىsee لَهُمُfor them زِيّاًa bearing سَيُهلِكُهُمwill destroy them
وَفِتيَةًand young men لَمnot يُصيبواthey attain فيهِمُconcerning them البَصَراsound judgment
I see among them a bearing that will destroy them,
I see them wearing a garment that will destroy them
and young men whom they have failed to judge rightly.
And youths they did not look at wisely
ياO زَيدُZayd هَلa question marker لَكَfor you فيهِمconcerning them قَبلَbefore موبِقَةِa deadly calamity
تُسَعِّرُsets ablaze النارَthe fire فيin أَفنائِهِمtheir midst سَعَراfiercely
O Zayd, will you intervene with them before a deadly calamity
O Zayd, can you before a perishing
sets the fire raging in their midst?
Ignite the fire in their courts aflame
ياO زَيدُZayd أَهدِoffer لَهُمto them رَأياًcounsel يُعاشُlife is sustained بِهِby it
ياO زَيدُZayd زَيدَZayd بَنيthe sons of النَجّارِal-Najjar مُقتَصَراkeeping within bounds
O Zayd, offer them counsel by which they may live,
O Zayd, advise them with an opinion to live by
O Zayd, Zayd of Banu al-Najjar, keeping within bounds.
O Zayd, Zayd son of the carpenter self-contained
ياO زَيدُZayd أَخرِجbring out بَنيthe sons of النَجّارِal-Najjar إِذwhen عَمِيَتit grew blind
وَاِرفِضand abandon طَوائِفَthe factions of غَسّانٍGhassan لَهاto it الأُخَراthe others
O Zayd, bring Banu al-Najjar out, now that sight is lost,
O Zayd, bring out the carpenter’s sons when blinded
and leave Ghassan’s other factions to it.
And reject the factions of Ghassan who came later
