لَقَدindeed عَلِمَتhave learned بَنوthe sons of النَجّارِal-Najjār أَنّيthat I
أَذودُI ward off عَنِfrom العَشيرَةِthe clan بِالحُسامِwith the keen sword
Banū al-Najjār have indeed learned that I
The sons of Najjar knew well that I
defend the clan with the keen sword.
Defend the tribe with my sharp sword
وَقَدand indeed قَلَّدتُI have collared مِنfrom خِزيِthe disgrace of القَوافيthe rhymes
بَنيthe sons of سَهمٍSahm عَلىin رَغمِspite of الرِغامِthe dust
And I have collared with the disgrace of rhymes
I shamed the faulty rhymes
Banū Sahm, against their will, humbled in the dust.
With arrows at the stubborn foes
وَقَلَّدتُand I have collared الدَعِيَّthe false claimant to lineage لَهُمbelonging to them شَناراًdisgrace
إِلىuntil يَومِthe Day of التَغابُنِmutual loss وَالخِصامِand dispute
And I have collared their pretender with disgrace
And gave the slanderers a collar
until the Day of Mutual Loss and Dispute.
Until the day of reckoning and feud
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمَhas learned الزِبَعرىal-Zibaʿrā غَيرَwithout جَهلٍignorance
بِأَنَّthat العَبدَthe slave عَبدُthe slave of بَنيthe sons of حُمامِḤumām
And al-Zibaʿrā knows full well
Zib'ara knew well without ignorance
that the slave is the slave of Banū Ḥumām.
That a slave is owned by the dove nest's sons
أَبوهُhis father حينَwhen يُنسَبُhis lineage is traced أَوor يُحاميhe offers protection
فَلَيسَso he is not لَدىin المَكارِمِnoble deeds بِالمُساميa peer in rank
His father, when his lineage is traced or he offers protection,
When attributed to his father or protected
is thus no peer in noble deeds,
He has no honor compared to the highborn
لِدَعوَةِfor a claim of kinship مَعشَرٍa people كانواthey were جَميعاًall
كَأَسنانِlike the teeth of الحِمارِthe donkey مِنَfrom السَنامِthe hump
through claiming kinship with a people who were all
At the call of a group who were altogether
like a donkey’s teeth in relation to a hump.
Like donkey teeth from the bit coral
صَبَرتَyou endured عَلىin the face of الهَوانِhumiliation وَكُنتُand I was حُرّاًfreeborn
مِنَof النَجّارِal-Najjār وَالقُحَمِand the ordeals العِظامِthe mighty
You endured humiliation, while I was freeborn,
You were patient with humiliation while I was free
of al-Najjār and the mighty ordeals—
From the carpenter, the solid bones, and the sand dunes
بَنوsons of الحَربِwar العَوانِoft-renewed إِذاwhen اِقمَطَرَّتit grew fierce

sons of oft-renewed war when it grows fierce,
The sons of war and support when it poured
and armored warriors impregnate it in vengeance.
And the arrogance fertilized it for revenge
