إِيّاكَbeware! إِنّيindeed I قَدalready كَبِرتُI have grown old وَغالَنيand kept me away
عَنكَfrom you الغَوائِلُcalamities قَبلَbefore شَيبِthe gray hair of المَكبَرِold age
Beware: I have indeed grown old, and have been kept
from you by calamities, even before the gray hair of old age.
فَجَعَلتَنيso you made me غَرَضَa target for اللِئامِthe base فَكُلُّهُمand every one of them

So you made me a target for the base, and every one of them
shoots with his baseness, whether hitting the mark or falling short.
عَنّيbecause of me تَضِبُّooze لِثاتُكُمyour gums فَغَدَتand so they became بِكُمin you
سَوداءَblack أَصلُthe root of فُروعِهاtheir branches كَالعُنقُرِlike a reed-root
Your gums ooze because of me, and in you have turned
black, the root of their branches like the root of a reed.
أَجَزَرتَهُمyou supplied them slaughter-meat عِرضيmy honor تَهَكَّمُyou mock سادِراًheedlessly

You handed them my honor to slaughter, mocking heedlessly.
May your mother lose you! Offer something other than my honor for slaughter.

A target the archers have taken turns shooting at, as though
they were shooting at a boulder in the midst of al-Mashʿar.
