Who will tell Ṣafwān that his old woman

is a slave woman belonging to the female neighbor of Maʿmar ibn Ḥabīb?

A slave woman whose origin, they say, is from al-Barājim—

a lineage among lineages, far removed.

Ask about Ḥanbal, if you wish to know her story:

what did he intend with her pierced opening?

Were it not for travel and the long stretch of a vast, trackless waste,

I would have left her crawling on her hock.
