مَنwho مُبلِغُone conveying الصِدّيقِal-Siddiq قَولاًa message كَأَنَّهُas though it were
إِذاwhen قُصَّis recounted بَينَamong المُسلِمينَthe Muslims المَبارِدُthe metal files
Who will convey to al-Siddiq a message that seems,
when recounted among the Muslims, like rasping files?
أَتَرضىare you content بِأَنّاwith the fact that we لَمnot تَجِفَّdry دِماؤُناour blood
وَهَذاand this عَروسٌa bridegroom بِاليَمامَةِin al-Yamamah خالِدُKhalid
Are you content that our blood has not yet dried,
while this man, Khalid, is a bridegroom in al-Yamamah?
يَبيتُspends the night يُناغيspeaks tenderly to عِرسَهُhis bride وَيَضُمُّهاand embraces her
وَهامٌand heads لَناof ours مَطروحَةًcast aside وَسَواعِدُand forearms
He spends the night speaking tenderly to his bride and embracing her,
while our heads and forearms lie cast aside.
إِذاwhen نَحنُwe جِئناwe come صَدَّturns away عَنّاfrom us بِوَجهِهِwith his face
وَتُلقىand are laid out لِأَعمامِfor the paternal uncles العَروسِof the bride الوَسائِدُthe cushions
When we come, he turns his face away from us,
while cushions are laid out for the bride's paternal uncles.
وَماand not كانَthere was فيin صِهرِkinship by marriage اليَماميَّthe Yamami رَغبَةٌdesire
وَلَوand even if لَمnot يُصِبbe struck down إِلّاexcept مِنَamong الناسِthe people واحِدُone
Nor was there any desire to marry into the Yamami's family,
even had only a single person been struck down.
فَكَيفَso what بِأَلفٍof a thousand قَدalready أُصيبواthey were struck down كَأَنَّماas though
دِمائُهُمُtheir blood بَينَamid السُيوفِthe swords المَجاسِدُthe red-dyed garments
So what of a thousand who were struck down, as though
their blood amid the swords were red-dyed garments?
فَإِنso if تَرضَyou approve هَذاthis فَالرِضاthen approval ماwhat رَضيتَهُyou approved of it
وَإِلّاand if not فَغَيِّرthen change إِنَّsurely أَمرَكَyour judgment راشِدُsound
So if you approve of this, whatever you approve is acceptable;
and if not, change it; surely your judgment is sound.
