عَرَفتَyou recognized دِيارَthe dwellings of زَينَبَZaynab بِالكَثيبِby the sand dune
كَخَطِّlike the strokes of الوَحيِwriting فيon الرَقِّparchment القَشيبِfresh
You recognized Zaynab's dwellings by the sand dune,
You knew the abode of Zainab by the sand hill
Like the strokes of writing on fresh parchment.
Like the line of revelation on crinkled parchment
تَعاوَرُهاassail them in turn الرِياحُthe winds وَكُلُّand every جَونٍdark raincloud
مِنَof الوَسمِيِّthe autumn rains مُنهَمِرٍpouring down سَكوبِflowing copiously
Winds assail them in turn, and every dark cloud
The winds alternate upon it and every passion
Of the autumn rains, pouring down in torrents.
From the rain-pouring season gushing outpouring
فَأَمسىso became رَسمُهاtheir traces خَلَقاًworn وَأَمسَتand they became
يَباباًdesolate بَعدَafter ساكِنِهاtheir dweller الحَبيبِbeloved
So their traces grew worn, and they became
So its outline has become creation by nightfall
Desolate after their beloved dweller had gone.
And a door after its beloved dweller
فَدَعso put aside عَنكَfrom you التَذَكُّرَremembering كُلَّevery يَومٍday
وَرُدَّand quell حَرارَةَthe heat of الصَدرِthe breast الكَئيبِsorrowful
So put aside your daily recollections,
So leave off remembering every day
And quell the heat of your sorrowful breast.
And soothe the heat of the gloomy chest
وَخَبِّرand tell بِالَّذيof that which لاno عَيبَfault فيهِin it
بِصِدقٍwith truth غَيرِunlike إِخبارِthe telling of الكَذوبِthe habitual liar
And tell of that in which there is no fault,
And inform with that which has no defect in it
Truthfully, not as a liar tells:
With truthfulness, not the telling of lies
بِماof what صَنَعَwrought المَليكُthe Sovereign غَداةَon the morning of بَدرٍBadr
لَناfor us فيagainst المُشرِكينَthe polytheists مِنَof النَصيبِthe allotted share
Of what the Sovereign wrought on the morning of Badr—
With what the King did the morning after Badr
The share allotted us against the polytheists.
For us from the polytheists the allotted portion
غَداةَon the morning كَأَنَّas though جَمعَهُمُtheir host حِراءٌMount Hira
بَدَتappeared أَركانُهُits flanks جُنحَat the approach of الغُروبِsunset
That morning, their host seemed like Mount Hira,
The morning as though their assembly was volcanic rock
Its flanks appearing at the approach of sunset.
Its pillars appeared to be the wings of sunset
فَلاقَيناهُمُso we met them مِنّاfrom our ranks بِجَمعٍwith a host
كَأُسدِlike lions الغابِthe thickets مِنof مُردٍbeardless youths وَشيبِand gray-haired men
So we met them with a host of our own,
So we met them from us with a group
Like lions of the thickets, beardless youths and gray-haired men,
As the lion of the forest from aged and grizzled
أَمامَin front of مُحَمَّدٍMuhammad قَدindeed آزَروهُthey aided him
عَلىagainst الأَعداءِthe enemies فيamid رَهجِthe dust of الحُروبِwars
In front of Muhammad, whom they aided
Before Muhammad, they supported him
Against the enemies amid the dust of war.
Against the enemies in the ferocity of battles
بِأَيديهِمin their hands صَوارِمُsharp swords مُرهَفاتٌfinely honed
وَكُلُّand every مُجَرَّبٍbattle-tested spear خاظيstout الكُعوبِthe shaft-joints
In their hands were sharp, finely honed swords,
In their hands swords bared
And every battle-tested, stout-jointed spear.
And every seasoned warrior firm in onslaught
بَنوthe sons of الأَوسِAws الغَطارِفِthe highborn آزَرَتهاaided them
بَنوthe sons of النَجّارِal-Najjar فيin الدينِthe faith الصَليبِsteadfast
The noble sons of Aws were aided
The sons of Aus the heroic supported them
By the sons of al-Najjar in the steadfast faith.
The sons of Najjar in religion crosses
فَغادَرناso we left أَباAbu (father of) جَهلٍJahl صَريعاًstruck down
وَعُتبَةَand Utbah قَدindeed تَرَكناwe left بِالجَبوبِon the bare ground
So we left Abu Jahl struck down,
So we left Abu Jahl lifeless
And Utbah we left upon the bare ground.
And Utbah, we left amongst the corpses
وَشَيبَةَand Shaybah قَدindeed تَرَكناwe left فيamong رِجالٍmen
ذَويpossessing حَسَبٍancestral honor إِذاwhen اِنتَسَبواthey traced their descent حَسيبِillustrious
And Shaybah we left among men
And Shaybah we left amongst men
Of noble lineage, illustrious when they traced their descent.
Of lineage, when they trace their ancestry, noble
يُناديهِمhe calls to them رَسولُthe Messenger of اللَهِGod لَمّاwhen
قَذَفناهُمwe hurled them كَباكِبَin heaps فيinto القَليبِthe well
The Messenger of God called to them when
The Messenger of Allah calls them when
We hurled them in heaps into the well:
We hurled them into the frying pan
أَلَمdid you not تَجِدواyou find حَديثِmy words كانَwas حَقّاًtrue
وَأَمرُand the decree of اللَهِGod يَأخُذُtakes hold بِالقُلوبِof hearts
"Did you not find that my words were true?"
"Did you not find the discourse was truth
And God's decree lays hold of hearts.
And Allah's command takes hold of hearts?"
فَماso not نَطَقواthey spoke وَلَوand if نَطَقواthey spoke لَقالواthey would have said

So they did not speak; had they spoken, they would have said:
So they did not speak, and if they spoke, they would have said
"You spoke the truth, and your judgment was sound."
"You spoke truthfully and you were of correct opinion"
