أَشاقَكَdid it stir your longing? مِنfrom أُمِّmother of الوَليدِal-Walid رُبوعُdwellings
بَلاقِعُdesolate wastes ماnot مِنof أَهلِهِنَّtheir inhabitants جَميعُa gathering
Have the dwellings of Umm al-Walid stirred your longing?
The meadows of Umm Al-Walid have yearned for you
Desolate wastes, with no gathering of their inhabitants left.
Now empty, none of their people remain
عَفاهُنَّeffaced them صَيفِيُّsummer الرِياحِthe winds وَواكِفٌand dripping rain
مِنَfrom الدَلوِthe Bucket رَجّافُviolently trembling السَحابِthe clouds هُموعُpouring copiously
Summer winds have effaced them, and dripping rain
The summer winds have uncovered them
From the Bucket, its clouds quaking, pouring copiously.
And the pouring clouds have left them bare
فَلَمso not يَبقَremained إِلّاexcept موقَدُthe hearth of النارِthe fire حَولَهُaround it
رَواكِدُmotionless stones أَمثالُlike الحَمامِpigeons وُقوعُsettled
So nothing remained but the fire's hearth, around it
Naught remains but the glowing embers
Motionless stones like pigeons settled down.
And the settlements of doves upon them
فَدَعso leave ذِكرَthe memory of دارٍa dwelling بَدَّدَتscattered بَينَamong أَهلِهاits people
نَوىًdistance فَرَّقَتsplit apart بَينَamong الجَميعِthe whole gathering قَطوعُsundering
So leave the memory of a dwelling whose people were scattered
So leave the mention of a house torn apart
By a sundering distance that split the whole company apart.
By enmity that severed all its people
وَقُلand say إِنif يَكُنbe يَوماًa day بِأُحدٍat Uhud يَعُدُّهُhe reckons it
سَفيهٌa fool فَإِنَّthen indeed الحَقَّthe truth سَوفَwill يَشيعُspread
And say: if a day at Uhud is reckoned up
And say that if one day they think it grand
By a fool, the truth will surely spread.
Then soon enough the truth will spread
وَقَدand indeed ضارَبَتfought فيهِin it بَنوthe sons of الأَوسِal-Aws كُلُّهُمall of them
وَكانَand was لَهاfor it ذِكرٌrenown هُناكَthere رَفيعُlofty
And all the sons of al-Aws fought there,
The Aus struck there, all of them
And theirs was a lofty renown there.
And tales of it will glorious be
وَحامىand defended بَنوthe sons of النَجّارِal-Najjar فيهِin it وَضارَبواand fought
وَماand not كانَwas مِنهُمamong them فيin اللِقاءِthe encounter جَزوعُfainthearted
And the sons of al-Najjar stood in defense there and fought,
The Helpers fought there too and struck
And none of them was fainthearted in the clash.
And none but the steadfast remained
أَمامَin front of رَسولِthe Messenger of اللَهِGod لاnot يَخذُلونَهُthey forsake him
لَهُمfor them ناصِرٌa helper مِنfrom رَبِّهِمtheir Lord وَشَفيعُand an intercessor
In front of the Messenger of God, they did not forsake him;
Before Allah's Messenger they did not waver
They have a helper from their Lord, and an intercessor.
For them a helper and intercessor was He
وَفَواthey kept faith إِذwhen كَفَرتُمyou disbelieved ياO سَخينَSakhin بِرَبِّكُمin your Lord
وَلاand not يَستَويis equal عَبدٌa servant عَصىdisobeyed وَمُطيعُand an obedient one
They kept faith when you disbelieved in your Lord, O Sakhin,
Oh heathens, evil is your disbelief in your Lord
And a disobedient servant is not equal to an obedient one.
A disobedient slave is not like one obedient
بِأَيمانِهِمin their right hands بيضٌbright swords إِذاwhen حَسِرَbares itself الوَغىbattle
فَلاso there is no بُدَّescape أَنthat يَردىperish بِهِنَّby them صَريعُone struck down
In their right hands are gleaming swords; when battle bares itself,
When war flares their oaths shine white
Then someone must inevitably fall slain by them.
And many by them will be struck down
كَماjust as غادَرَتleft behind فيin النَقعِthe dust عُثمانَUthman ثاوِياًlying still
وَسَعداًand Sa'd صَريعاًstruck down وَالوَشيجُand the spears شُروعُleveled
As they left Uthman lying in the dust,
As they left Othman rotting at Naq‘a
And Sa'd struck down, while the spears were leveled.
And Sa‘d a corpse with Al Washij raging
وَقَدand indeed غادَرَتleft behind تَحتَbeneath العَجاجَةِthe dust-cloud مُسنَداًpropped up
أُبَيّاًUbayy وَقَدand already بَلَّsoaked القَميصَthe shirt نَجيعُblood
And they left, propped up beneath the dust-cloud,
And they left under the boughs one propped up
Ubayy, his shirt already soaked with blood,
Ubayy as his shirt soaked up the gore
بِكَفِّby the hand of رَسولِthe Messenger of اللَهِGod حَتّىuntil تَلَفَّفَتwrapped themselves
عَلىover القَومِthe people مِمّاfrom what قَدindeed يُثِرنَthey stir up نُقوعُdust-clouds
By the hand of the Messenger of God, until there closed
By the hand of Allah’s Messenger they wrapped him
Around the people clouds of dust that they stirred up.
To shield the people from things profane
أولَئِكَthose قَوميmy people سادَةٌlords مِنfrom فُروعِهِمtheir noble branches
وَمِنand from كُلِّevery قَومٍa people سادَةٌlords وَفُروعُand noble branches
Those are my people, lords from their noble branches;
Those are my people, the chiefs of their branches
And every people has lords and noble branches.
For each people chiefs and branches there are
بِهِنَّthrough them يُعِزُّgrants might اللَهُGod حينَwhen يُعِزُّناHe makes us mighty
وَإِنand even if كانَwas أَمرٌan affair ياO سَخينَSakhin فَظيعُdreadful
Through them God grants might when He makes us mighty,
Through them Allah gives us honor
Even if the matter, O Sakhin, is dreadful.
When gives us honor, Oh heathens, dread He does
فَإِنso if تَذكَرواyou mention قَتلىthe slain وَحَمزَةُand Hamza فيهِمُamong them
قَتيلٌa slain man ثَوىlay at rest لِلَّهِfor God وَهوَand he مُطيعُobedient
So if you mention the slain, with Hamza among them,
And if you recall the dead with Hamzah among them
A slain man who rests for God's sake, obedient to Him,
A martyr whose place is in heaven sublime
فَإِنَّthen indeed جِنانَthe gardens of الخُلدِeternity مَنزِلُهُhis dwelling بِهاin them
وَأَمرُand the command of الَّذيthe One who يَقضيdetermines الأُمورَaffairs سَريعُswift
Then indeed his home is in the gardens of eternity,
Indeed the gardens of eternity are his abode
And swift is the command of Him who determines all affairs.
And the One who decides all matters is swift
وَقَتلاكُمُand your slain فيin النارِthe Fire أَفضَلُthe best of رِزقِهِمtheir sustenance
حَميمٌboiling water مَعاًtogether فيin جَوفِهاits depths وَضَريعُand thorny fodder
And your slain are in the Fire; the best of their sustenance
While your deaths in the fire are better fortune for them
Is boiling water and thorny fodder together in its depths.
Parched together in its depths, suckling there
