Ask the sons of al-Ashʿar, if you come to them,
Ask the tribe of Bani Ash'ar, if you come upon them,
what news there was of Abū Wāsiʿ,
What was the news of my father Waasil?
إِذwhen تَرَكوهُthey abandoned him وَهوَand he يَدعوهُمُcalls upon them
بِالنَسَبِby kinship الأَقصىthe most distant وَبِالجامِعِand by the uniting bond
when they abandoned him as he appealed to them,
When they left him calling out to them
invoking their remotest kinship and their common bond,
With the closest kinship and shared faith,
وَاللَيثُand the lion يَعلوهُbears down on him بِأَنيابِهِwith its fangs
مُنعَفِراًprostrate in the dust وَسطَamid دَمٍblood ناقِعِfresh
while the lion bore down on him with its fangs,
Yet the lion was tearing him with its fangs
prostrate in the dust amid fresh blood.
Bellowing amid gushing blood,
لاnot يَرفَعُraises الرَحمَنُthe Merciful مَصروعَهُمtheir fallen man
وَلاand not يُوَهِّنweakens قُوَّةَthe strength of الصارِعِthe one who struck him down
May the Merciful not raise their fallen man,
But the Merciful did not raise up their fallen,
nor weaken the strength of the one who struck him down.
Nor weaken the strength of the wrestler.
