أَلاAh! لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether أَتىreached مَكَّةَMecca الَّذيthose whom
قَتَلناwe slew مِنَamong الكُفّارِthe unbelievers فيin ساعَةِthe hour of العُسرِhardship
Ah, would that I knew whether news has reached Mecca of those
We slew among the unbelievers in the hour of hardship.
قَتَلناwe slew سَراةَthe chiefs of القَومِthe people عِندَat رِحالِهِمtheir encampments
فَلَمso did not يَرجِعواthey return إِلّاexcept بِقاصِمَةِwith a shattering blow to الظَهرِthe back
We slew the people's chiefs at their encampments;
And they returned with nothing but a back-breaking blow.
قَتَلناwe slew أَباAbu (father of) جَهلِJahl (ignorance) وَعُتبَةَand Utbah بَعدَهُafter him
وَشَيبَةَand Shaybah أَيضاًalso عِندَamid نائِرَةِthe blaze of الصَبرِsteadfastness
We slew Abu Jahl, and Utbah after him,
And Shaybah too, amid the blaze of steadfast combat.
وَكَمand how many قَدindeed قَتَلناwe slew مِنamong كَريمٍa noble man مُرَزَّءٍmuch sought for his bounty
لَهُhe had حَسَبٌhonorable standing فيamong قَومِهِhis people نابِهِrenowned الذِكرِin repute
And how many a noble man, sought for his bounty, we slew,
Of honorable standing among his people, renowned in name.
تَرَكناهُمُwe left them لِلخامِعاتِto the limping hyenas تَنوبُهُمrevisit them
وَيَصلَونَand they burn in ناراًa fire ثُمَّthen نائِيَةَfar-distant القَعرِthe bottom
We left them to the limping hyenas that revisit them,
And then they will burn in a fire whose bottom lies far below,
بِكُفرِهِمُbecause of their disbelief بِاللَهِin God وَالدينُwhile the faith قائِمٌstands firm
وَماand not طَلَبواthey sought فيناagainst us بِطائِلَةِfor a claim of الوِترِblood vengeance
For their disbelief in God, while the faith stands firm.
Nor did they pursue any claim of blood vengeance against us.
لَعَمريby my life لَقَدindeed قَلَّتhave dwindled كَتائِبُthe battalions of غالِبٍGhalib
وَماand not ظَفِرَتthey triumphed يَومَthe day اِلتَقَيناwe met عَلىat بَدرِBadr
By my life, Ghalib's battalions have indeed dwindled,
And they did not triumph the day we met at Badr.
