أَلاAh! ياO لَقَومٍpeople appealed to هَلis there? لِماfor what حُمَّwas decreed دافِعُone who averts
أَلا يا لَقَومٍ هَل لِما حُمَّ دافِعُ
وَهَلand will? ماwhat مَضىhas passed مِنof صالِحِthe good of العَيشِlife راجِعُreturning
وَهَل ما مَضى مِن صالِحِ العَيشِ راجِعُ
Ah, people! Can anyone avert what is decreed?
And will the good life that has passed return?
تَذَكَّرتُI recalled عَصراًan age قَدalready مَضىhad passed فَتَهافَتَتthen tumbled down
تَذَكَّرتُ عَصراً قَد مَضى فَتَهافَتَت
بَناتُdaughters الحَشاthe inner breast وَاِنهَلَّand poured down مِنّيfrom me المَدامِعُthe tears
بَناتُ الحَشا وَاِنهَلَّ مِنّي المَدامِعُ
I recalled an age now past, and down tumbled
The daughters of my heart, while tears streamed from me.
صَبابَةُlonging وَجدٍgrief ذَكَّرَتنيreminded me أَحِبَّةًloved ones
صَبابَةُ وَجدٍ ذَكَّرَتني أَحِبَّةً
وَقَتلىand slain men مَضَواpassed away فيهِمamong them نُفَيعٌNufayʿ وَرافِعُand Rāfiʿ
وَقَتلى مَضَوا فيهِم نُفَيعٌ وَرافِعُ
Sorrowful longing reminded me of loved ones,
And slain men who passed away, among them Nufayʿ and Rāfiʿ,
وَسَعدٌand Saʿd فَأَضحَواso they became فيin الجِنانِParadise's gardens وَأَوحَشَتand became desolate
وَسَعدٌ فَأَضحَوا في الجِنانِ وَأَوحَشَت
مَنازِلُهُمtheir homes وَالأَرضُand the land مِنهُمwithout them بَلاقِعُbarren wastes
مَنازِلُهُم وَالأَرضُ مِنهُم بَلاقِعُ
And Saʿd; so they are now in Paradise's gardens, and desolate stand
Their homes, and the land without them is barren.
وَفَواkept faith يَومَon the day of بَدرٍBadr لِلرَسولِto the Messenger وَفَوقَهُمand above them
وَفَوا يَومَ بَدرٍ لِلرَسولِ وَفَوقَهُم
ظِلالُshadows المَناياdeath وَالسُيوفُand the swords اللَوامِعُgleaming
ظِلالُ المَنايا وَالسُيوفُ اللَوامِعُ
They kept faith with the Messenger on the day of Badr, while above them
Hung the shadows of death and the gleaming swords.
دَعاhe called فَأَجابوهُso they answered him بِحَقٍّtruly وَكُلُّهُمand all of them
دَعا فَأَجابوهُ بِحَقٍّ وَكُلُّهُم
مُطيعٌobedient لَهُto him فيin كُلِّevery أَمرٍcommand وَسامِعُand attentive
مُطيعٌ لَهُ في كُلِّ أَمرٍ وَسامِعُ
He called, and they answered him truly; and every one of them
Was obedient to him in every command, and attentive.
فَماso not بَدَّلواthey changed حَتّىuntil تَوافَواthey gathered together جَماعَةًas a group
فَما بَدَّلوا حَتّى تَوافَوا جَماعَةً
وَلاand not يَقطَعُcuts short الآجالَallotted lifespans إِلّاexcept المَصارِعُfatal falls
وَلا يَقطَعُ الآجالَ إِلّا المَصارِعُ
So they did not change until they gathered together as one;
And nothing cuts short allotted lives but fatal falls.
لِأَنَّهُمُbecause they يَرجونَhope for مِنهُfrom him شَفاعَةًintercession
لِأَنَّهُمُ يَرجونَ مِنهُ شَفاعَةً
إِذاwhen لَمnot يَكُنthere is إِلّاexcept النَبِيِّينَthe prophets شافِعُan intercessor
إِذا لَم يَكُن إِلّا النَبِيِّينَ شافِعُ
For they hope for intercession from him
When there is no intercessor but the prophets.
وَذَلِكَand that ياO خَيرَbest of العِبادِthe servants بَلاؤُناour valor
وَذَلِكَ يا خَيرَ العِبادِ بَلاؤُنا
وَمَشهَدُناand our stand فيfor اللَهِGod وَالمَوتُand death ناقِعُrife
وَمَشهَدُنا في اللَهِ وَالمَوتُ ناقِعُ
And that, O best of servants, is our valor,
And our stand for God, while death was rife.
لَناours is القَدَمُthe step الأولىfirst إِلَيكَtoward you وَخَلفُناand our successors
لَنا القَدَمُ الأولى إِلَيكَ وَخَلفُنا
لِأَوَّلِناof our forerunners فيin طاعَةِobedience to اللَهِGod تابِعُa follower
لِأَوَّلِنا في طاعَةِ اللَهِ تابِعُ
Ours is the first step toward you, and our successors
Follow our forerunners in obedience to God.
وَنَعلَمُand we know أَنَّthat المُلكَsovereignty لِلَّهِto God وَحدَهُHim alone
وَنَعلَمُ أَنَّ المُلكَ لِلَّهِ وَحدَهُ
وَأَنَّand that قَضاءَdecree of اللَهِGod لاno بُدَّescape واقِعُcoming to pass
وَأَنَّ قَضاءَ اللَهِ لا بُدَّ واقِعُ
And we know that sovereignty belongs to God alone,
And that God's decree will inevitably come to pass.
