أَلاAh! لَيتَنيif only I فيهاthere; in it شَهِدتُI was present with اِبنَson of طارِقٍTariq
أَلا لَيتَني فيها شَهِدتُ اِبنَ طارِقٍ
وَزَيداًand Zayd وَماand not تُغنيavail الأَمانيthe wishes وَمَرثَداand Marthad
وَزَيداً وَما تُغني الأَماني وَمَرثَدا
Ah, if only I had been there with Ibn Tariq,
Ah, would that in it I had witnessed the son of Tariq,
And Zayd—and wishes avail nothing—and Marthad,
And Zayd, but what use are wishes, or Murthad?
وَدافَعتُand I defended عَنon behalf of حِبَّيmy two dear friends خُبَيبٍKhubayb وَعاصِمٍand Asim
وَدافَعتُ عَن حِبَّي خُبَيبٍ وَعاصِمٍ
وَكانَand it would have been شِفاءًa balm; healing لَوif تَدارَكتُI had overtaken خالِداKhalid
وَكانَ شِفاءً لَو تَدارَكتُ خالِدا
And had defended my two dear friends, Khubayb and Asim;
I would have defended my beloved Khubayb and 'Asim,
And it would have been a balm had I overtaken Khalid.
And it would have been a cure had I embraced Khalid.
