Now, convey a message to Abu Qays:

if he lends it an ear, it will make things clear.

You have forgotten the bridge on the day of Abu Aqil,

though you have certain knowledge of our battles.

Then I am no chaste woman's son if you are not visited

amid your homes by a blazing, grinding war.

The mighty man submits to it when he sees it,

and the inhabitants flee in fear of it.

The budding-breasted virgin turns gray within it,

and the unborn child is miscarried for fear of it.

Before your eyes are the cleaving swords, when blows are dealt

with them to champions and motionless heads.

You give away the champions' lives with ease,

while with your own life you are a cunning miser.

There is no deafness in your ears when you are called

at midmorning, yet you neither answer nor help.

Did we not leave gatherings of wailing mourners,

their cries ringing out over your chieftains?

You disgrace them, so you claim, without any grounds,

but, if you knew, through them you disgrace yourself.

You killed one of us with a thousand—

ah, by God, what a clear triumph!

And that is because your thousand counts for little

beside one of us—yes, and a lie besides.

So may you remain as you were of old,

and may we remain as we have always been.

A band of al-Najjar encircles you,

like lions of the thickets, whose dwelling is the lair.

    The lion remains there, subdued,

his moan sounding in every tangled thicket.

It is as though their splendor, to those who behold them,

from spearheads and gleaming swords, were refined silver.

We seem, when we vie with you as men,

like black camels as the men clash in combat.

For slaughter befell you before Bu'ath,

    and after Bu'ath, abject humiliation.

And we will not be content with this—know it,

O people of Aws, as long as the plaintive cry is heard.

And I have honored you and held my tongue about you,

O chiefs of Aws—if only silence had helped—

out of shame at trading insults with you, and to safeguard

my honor, for it is a rich heritage of renown.

And I honored the women and said, 'My clan'—

and this is the time for me to speak or make things clear.
