What ails your eye, that its tears will not cease,
What ails your eye, whose tears will not cease,
pouring upon your breast like restless pearls?
streaming onto your breast like restless pearls,

لا فاشِلٍ حينَ تَلقاهُ وَلا نَزِقِ
For Khubayb, whose death was for the All-Merciful—
over Khubayb—and in the All-Merciful's cause he fell—
neither one to falter when you met him, nor rash.
neither fainthearted when you met him nor rash?

Go forth, Khubayb; may God reward you with a goodly reward,
So go, Khubayb; may God grant you a goodly reward,
and the eternal Garden, among the houris in gentle fellowship.
and the Garden of Eternity, beside the houris among companions.
ماذاwhat تَقولونَyou say إِنif قالَsays النَبِيُّthe Prophet لَكُمto you
ماذا تَقولونَ إِن قالَ النَبِيُّ لَكُم
حينَwhen المَلائِكَةُthe angels الأَبرارُrighteous فيon الأُفُقِthe horizon

What will you say if the Prophet says to you,
What will you say if the Prophet says to you,
while the righteous angels stand upon the horizon:
when the righteous angels are on the horizon:
فيمَfor what reason قَتَلتُمyou killed شَهيدَthe martyr of اللَهِGod فيfor رَجُلٍa man
فيمَ قَتَلتُم شَهيدَ اللَهِ في رَجُلٍ

طاغٍ قَدِ اِوعَثَ في البُلدانِ وَالطُرُقِ
Why did you kill God’s martyr for the sake of a man—
Why did you kill God's martyr for a man,
a tyrant who had pressed through lands and roads?
a tyrant who has ranged far through towns and roads?
أَباAbu (father of) إِهابٍIhab فَبَيِّنso explain ليto me حَديثَكُمُyour account

أَينَ الغَزالُ مُحَلّى الدُرِّ وَالوَرِقِ
Abu Ihab, then tell me plainly of your affair:
Abu Ihab, explain your account to me:
where is the gazelle adorned with pearls and silver?
Where is the gazelle adorned with pearls and silver?

Never mention, when you are boasting,
Do not ever mention, when you are boasting,
Abu Kutaybah; you have gone too far in folly—
Abu Kuthaybah—you have gone too far in folly—

nor Aziz, for treachery is a dishonor;
nor Aziz, for treachery is a disgrace;
Aziz is petty in spirit and character.
indeed, Aziz is petty in spirit and character.
