كُنتَyou were السَوادَthe pupil لِناظِريfor my eye
كُنتَ السَوادَ لِناظِري
فَعَميand went blind عَلَيكَover you الناظِرُthe eye
فَعَمي عَلَيكَ الناظِرُ
You were the black pupil of my eye;
You were the pupil of my eye;
And over you, the seeing eye went blind.
And my eye went blind with grief for you.
مَنwhoever شاءَwishes بَعدَكَafter you فَليَمُتthen let him die
مَن شاءَ بَعدَكَ فَليَمُت
فَعَلَيكَand for you كُنتُI was أُحاذِرُI fear
فَعَلَيكَ كُنتُ أُحاذِرُ
Whoever wishes may die after you;
Let whoever wishes die after you;
For you were the one I feared to lose.
For it was for you that I feared.
