    Whenever Quraysh's lineage is traced or scrutinized,

    You have no root in its ancestral stock.

    The sons of Huṣayṣ cast you out of their father's line,

    To Shijʿ, where bags are stolen.

    قَدِ اِندَبَ حَبلَ عاتِقِكَ الوِطابُ

    And you, son of al-Mughīra, are a slave to she-camels yielding little milk;

    The milk-skins have already scarred the sinew of your shoulder.

    When the noblest of Quraysh are counted,

    Dogs gather ahead of your lineage.

    And as for ʿImrān, son of Makhzūm—leave that lineage alone:

    There lie the choicest stock and the purest ancestral honor.
