Indeed, a tear has streamed from your weeping eyes,

And rightly should my eye overflow for Sa'd—

A slain man who lay on a battlefield, whose loss has bereaved

    Eyes shedding tears, unceasing in their sorrow;

In the faith of the All-Merciful, heir to a garden,

With the martyrs—its guests the noblest of guests.

For if you have bidden us farewell with affection,

And now lie in dust-gray earth, in a dark burial niche,

Then you, O Sa'd, are the one who returned with a feat

Of honor, and robes of noble deeds and praise,

Through your judgment upon Qurayza's two clans, according to what

God decreed for them, when you judged deliberately.

Thus your judgment concerning them accorded with God's judgment,

And you did not pardon when reminded of the covenant that once was.

For if time's vicissitudes have carried you away among those who

Sold this world for His everlasting gardens,

How excellent, then, is the destination of the truthful when they are called

To God one day, for honor and uprightness.
