Whoever delights in pure death, with nothing mixed into it,
He who rejoices in death when it comes to him unbidden
Then let him come to a lions' den in Uthman's house:
Should come to fight at Uthman's house.

Bearing rings of fine mail on their backs, paired
They wear the callus of prostration proudly on their foreheads,
With helmets above their noses, adorning their bodies.
While they recite the Qur'an and chant praises all night long.

But would that I knew, and would that the birds would tell me
I wish I knew—would that a bird might tell me!—
What was the affair of Ali and the son of Affan?
What passed between Ali and Uthman's son.

They sacrificed a gray-haired man bearing the mark of prostration,
Soon you shall hear in your own lands
Who spent the night glorifying God and reciting the Qur'an.
"God is most great!"—O Avengers of Uthman!
لَتَسمَعُنَّyou will surely hear وَشيكاًsoon فيin دِيارِكُمُyour homes
اللَهُGod أَكبَرُis greatest ياO ثاراتِvengeance for عُثماناUthman
Soon you will surely hear in your homes:
I am content with the Syrian troops
God is greatest! Vengeance for Uthman!
And the Commander and the brethren as brethren.
وَقَدand indeed رَضيتُI am content بِأَهلِwith the people of الشَأمِSyria زافِرَةًa supporting host

وَبِالأَميرِand with the commander وَبِالإِخوانِand with the brethren إِخواناas brothers
And I am indeed content with Syria's people as my supporters,
I am one of them, whether absent or present,
And with the commander, and with the brethren as brothers.
Until death, though I was not called Hassaan.
إِنيindeed I لَمِنهُمsurely one of them وَإِنand even if غابواthey are absent وَإِنand even if شَهِدواthey are present
حَتّىuntil المَماتَdeath وَماand not سُمّيتُI was named حَسّاناHassan
I am surely one of them, whether they are absent or present,
Woe, oh my life I'd ransom you, mother who bore me!
Until death—or my name is not Hassan.
Patience may avail when the hated thing comes.
وَيهاًonward! فِدىًa ransom لَكُمُfor you أُمّيmy mother وَماand all that وَلَدَتshe bore

Onward! May my mother and all she bore be your ransom!
Gird the swords about your waists
Patience may sometimes help in adversity.
Until death comes to him whose time is due.
شُدّواfasten! السُيوفَthe swords بِثِنيٍwith a double loop فيin مَناطِقِكُمyour belts

Fasten your swords with a double loop in your belts,
Perhaps you may one day see with joy
Until whoever is doomed meets death by them.
God's Caliph among you, as he once was.
لَعَلَّكُمperhaps you أَنto تَرَواsee يَوماًone day بِمَغبَطَةٍwith delight
خَليفَةَthe caliph of اللَهِGod فيكُمamong you كَالَّذيlike the one who كاناwas
Perhaps one day you will see, to your delight,
God's caliph among you, like the one who was before.
