لَقَدsurely عَلِمَتlearned قُرَيشٌQuraysh يَومَon the day of بَدرٍBadr
غَداةَthe morning of الأَسرِcapture وَالقَتلِand killing الشَديدِfierce
Quraysh surely learned on the day of Badr,
Quraysh knew well the day they faced us
On the morning of capture and fierce slaughter,
At Badr, when captives fell and battle raged-
بِأَنّاthat we حينَwhen تَشتَجِرُinterlock العَواليlong spears
حُماةُdefenders الرَوعِterror يَومَthe day of أَبيAbu (father of) الوَليدِal-Walid
That, when the long spears interlock,
That we are men who, when the stallions stampede,
We are defenders amid battle’s terror, on Abu al-Walid’s day.
Defend their fillies on the day of Abū Walīd.
قَتَلناwe killed اِبنَيthe two sons of رَبيعَةَRabi'ah يَومَthe day سارواthey marched
إِلَيناtoward us فيin مُضاعَفَةِdouble-layered الحَديدِiron
We killed Rabi'ah’s two sons when they marched
We slew the sons of Rabī‘ah when they came
Against us in double-layered iron armor.
Against us multiplying sharpened swords.
وَفَرَّand fled بِهاwith it حَكيمٌHakim يَومَon the day جالَتwheeled about
بَنوsons of النَجّارِal-Najjar تَخطِرُstride proudly كَالأُسودِlike lions
And Hakim fled with it when they wheeled about—
With them fled Ḥakīm when the tribe of Najjār
Banu al-Najjar, striding like lions.
Charged like lions - he deserted them far off.
وَوَلَّتand turned away عِندَat ذاكَthat جُموعُthe hosts of فِهرٍFihr
وَأَسلَمَهاand abandoned them الحُوَيرِثُal-Huwayrith مِنfrom بَعيدِafar
And then the hosts of Fihr turned in flight,
Then rallied the tribes of Fihār and fled,
And al-Huwayrith abandoned them from afar.
Abandoned by al-Ḥuwairith from afar.
لَقَدsurely لاقَيتُمُyou encountered خِزياًdisgrace وَذُلّاًand humiliation
جَهيزاًdeadly باقِياًlasting تَحتَbeneath الوَريدِthe jugular vein
You surely encountered disgrace and humiliation,
You met dishonor and humiliation then
Deadly and lasting beneath the jugular vein.
A lasting shame that seeps into your veins
وَكانَand had القَومُthe men قَدalready وَلَّواturned their backs جَميعاًall
وَلَمand did not يَلوُواpay heed عَلىto الحَسَبِhonor of lineage التَليدِancestral
And the men had all turned their backs,
As all the tribes had turned and fled away
And paid no heed to their ancestral honor.
No longer firm in their ancestral claim.
