أَبوكَyour father أَبوكَyour father وَأَنتَand you اِبنُهُhis son
فَبِئسَso vile is البُنَيُّthe little son وَبِئسَand vile is الأَبُthe father
Your father is your father, and you are his son.
Your father is your father while you're his son,
So vile is the little son, and vile the father.
So wretched is the son and the father is wretched.
وَأُمُّكَand your mother سَوداءُblack مَودونَةٌstunted
كَأَنَّas though أَنامِلَهاher fingertips الحُنظُبُthe black beetle
And your mother is black and stunted,
And your mother is a black bondwoman,
As though her fingertips were black beetles.
Her fingers seem like woodlice.
يَبيتُspends the night أَبوكَyour father بِهاwith her مُعرِساًcoupling
كَماjust as ساوَرَpounced at الهُوَّةَthe pit الثَعلَبُthe fox
Your father spends the night coupling with her,
Your father sleeps with her as a husband,
Like a fox pouncing at a pit.
Like a fox that crept into a crevice.
فَماso not مِنكَat you أَعجَبُI marvel ياO اِبنِson of اِستِهاher arse
وَلَكِنَّنيbut I مِنat أُلىthose who أَعجَبُI marvel
So I do not marvel at you, O son of her arse;
I'm not surprised by you, son of a worthless woman,
But I marvel at those who,
But I'm surprised by my own kin!
إِذاwhen سَمِعواthey hear الغَيَّdepravity آدواthey incline لَهُtoward it
تُيوسٌhe-goats تَنِبُّthey bleat إِذاwhen تَضرِبُthey mate
When they hear of depravity, incline toward it:
When they hear him babble, they answer him,
He-goats that bleat when they mate.
Josephs that bleat when beaten!
تَرىyou see التَيسَthe he-goat عِندَهُمُamong them كَالجَوادِlike a noble steed
بَلِrather التَيسُthe he-goat وَسطَهُمُin their midst أَنجَبُbetter bred
You see the he-goat among them as a noble steed;
You see the he-goats among them like stallions—
Rather, the he-goat in their midst is better bred.
Nay, the he-goat among them is the noblest!
فَلاso do not تَدعُهُمsummon them لِقِراعِto clash with الكُماةِthe warriors
وَنادِand call out إِلىto سَوأَةٍa crotch يَركَبواthey will mount
So do not summon them to clash with warriors;
So forbid them to gamble with knucklebones
And call them to a crotch—they will mount it.
And call them to a mare they can ride.
