Why do I see you, once a companion of sociability and peace,
Why do I see you troubled, O brother of comfort and peace?
Now at peace with cares and thoughts?
Your mind and thoughts have become anxious and distressed,
وَماand why لِمُنسَكِبِfor the pouring الأَجفانِeyelids كَالسَلمِlike the salam-tree

أَمِن تَذَكُّرِ جيرانٍ بِذي سِلمِ
And why do your streaming eyelids resemble the salam-tree?
And why does the one who sheds tears have eyelids like a dart?
Is it from remembering neighbors at Dhu Salam
Is it from remembering neighbors in soldi?

You blended a tear that flowed from an eyelash with blood,
Or did a cooing gray dove drive your sleep away?
Or did your slumber fly from the tenderness of a sleeper?

She sang confusedly with a soul infatuated with you,
A soul unable to suppress its passionate longing.
Yet the soul is not one to conceal ardent love.

Or did the wind blow suddenly from Kasim
And lightning flash from the thirsty lands of Idam?
And lightning flashed from the darkness of clouds?

I marvel at you: when could your love remain hidden?
I wondered how you could conceal your love.
Do you deny a longing manifest to everyone?
Do you deny having a proven love for the people?
وَهَبكَand suppose you خَلواuntouched وَماand what قالوهُthey said مُفتَأَتاfabricated

فَما لِعَينَيكَ إِن قُلتَ أَكفَفاهَمتا
Suppose you were untouched, and their words mere fabrication:
Good fortune left you while you were heedless,
Why, when you tell your eyes to stop, do they pour?
And my evidence proved true sorrow and yearning.
وَماand why لِقَلبِكَfor your heart أَنif قُلتَyou said اِستَفِقawaken بِهِمit wanders (damaged)

Why does your heart wander when told to awaken?
So why do you deny love after witnesses for you
Had no flame from love's inward fire seized you,
Testified against you - the tears and the illness?

Your tears would not flow, nor pain inhabit your breast.
Yes, I knew you before now to be a constant reveler
An accused man would not attempt to deny the truth.
Delighting yourself with fine clothes and hopes.

Does the lover imagine that love remains concealed
Yet by nature, even if you deny it, everything is clear,
Between his flowing tears and his burning heart?
Else your eyes would not have shed tears for ruins.
نَعَمyes عَهِدتُّكَI knew you قَبلَbefore الآنَnow فيin جَذلِdelight

Yes, I knew you before now in delight,
Nor would I have been sleepless, remembering the ruins and the landmarks.
Strutting in robes of blessing and hope.
For the lover clues and evidence have appeared
فَأَنتَso you طَبعاًby nature وَإِنeven if أَنكَرتَyou denied كُلَّevery جَلىclear sign

لَولا الهَوى لَم تَرقَ دَمعاً عَلى طَلَلِ
Yet your nature is evident, though you deny every sign.
Even those hostile to you have criticized you.
Without love you would not shed tears over ruins,
An eye streaming and tears testified to his state.
وَلاnor أَرِقتُI lost sleep لِذِكرِat remembering البانِthe ban-tree وَالعِلمِand the landmark

لِلعاشِقِ فَبِكَ دَلالاتٌ وَقَد اِنوُجِدَت
Nor would I lose sleep remembering the ban-tree and landmark.
So how can you deny love after what testified for you
The lover's signs have indeed appeared in you;
Through the justice of tears and affliction?
حَتّىeven المَحبونَthe loving ones وَالأَعدىand bitter enemies لَكَyou اِنتَقَدَتcriticized

طَرفٌ يَفيضُ وَدَمعُ حالِهِ شَهِدَت
Even friends and bitter enemies have criticized you.
We thought you were blissful, never in distress.
An overflowing eye and tears testify to its condition.
Yet here you are - your heart is frail and weak.

How can you deny love after testimony
And ardent love has proven my insight correct, sorrow and longing.
Against you from the trustworthy witnesses, tears and sickness?
Like blossoms on your cheeks and darkness in the eyes.

Never held hostage to care.

Now your heart has weakened under misery.
If asked, “Did he pass by?” I would say,
Longing has inscribed two lines, of tears and wasting,
“Yes, the phantom of the one I love kept me awake.”

لَو كُنتُ مِثلِكَ وَالتَسهيدُ طَوَّقَني
Like yellow flowers and dark foliage upon your cheeks.
For love obstructs existence with pain.
Were I like you, encircled by sleeplessness,
How long will you go on denying what is clear?

لَقُلتُ إِن قيلَ هَل سارَ فَاِقلِقني
With the beloved's apparition stealing from me,
For how long will you oppose the truth as one accused?
I would say, if asked whether it came and troubled me:
Does the lover think the truth remains hidden?

Yes, my beloved's phantom traveled by night and kept me awake;
I openly confess my shortcoming to you;
Love interrupts pleasures with pain.
From me to you - though you were just, you would not blame.

Since ardent longing has been decreed,
Had you known the dangers lovers face,
Show mastery over it before your reproachers.
You would be the first to show sympathy to one excusing himself.

What I say is no limit to my desire
You who blame my chaste love, accept an apology
To keep secret from the slanderers my terrible state.

You advised me in earnest - if only souls
If you knew the dangers lovers face,
Kept good advice their perversities would vanish.

وَما أَقولُ وَما هَمّي بِمُقتَصَرٍ
You would first pity one offering an apology.
But my soul never learns and always rushes blindly into sin.
What can I say? My care is not confined.
I have been incapable of reforming its wants.

My condition [unclear]; my secret is not concealed
It inclines me to prefer base acts and entices me with immediate gain.
From tale-bearers, nor is my illness ended.
So rein in its desires and beware following it.

For if it is allowed into the pasture, it will not refrain from trespassing.
Patching blame beneath the guise of advice?
And do not incline toward what it desires, saying:

Take it easy: the best speech is the most useful.
“This is delightful and free of harm,” while it is misleading.
You offered sincere advice, but I do not hear it;
For it makes out sin to be sweet until

The lover is deaf to reproachers.
One realizes the poison in what appeared agreeable.
Leave off blaming me: blame, to my heart,
No man's state remains unchanged;

Is like a fire-stick struck: when kindled, it burns.
If famished he wanders, if sated he is discontent.
Leave your advice; do not expend it frivolously.
Moderation in all things is best, without greed or waste,

And caution against hunger and satiation.
Though gray hair's advice is furthest from suspicion.
For often dire straits are better than luxury.

Heed my earnest counsel; if souls preserved it,
Protect your soul, for how often has a soul sought
Their edges would soften rather than harden.
Refuge in the unlawful, having long recoiled from it.

My soul commanding evil has taken no warning,

Incline toward truth, justice and fairness; appease it.

A soul that never guides aright, and one who always refuses guidance.
For a guest arriving at my head unashamed.
So place in them no integrity or wisdom;

A noble guest whose appearance is in a person's hair:
And obey neither opponent nor judge.
Concealment suits him better with one who does not esteem him.
For you know the cunning of the adversary and the judge.

Had I known I would not honor him,
Which led me to drift from one meadow to the next.

This is sincere advice without shame.
Alas for my soul! Who can grasp its ultimate aim?
I seek Allah's forgiveness for words without deeds.

How often it carries me across deserts for its desires!
I have thus ascribed progeny to the infertile!
By God, I am helpless, despairing of its waywardness.
And exposed myself to criticism and suspicion:

“Are you this or that, or is my advice correct?”
As bridles restrain the headstrong rush of horses?
Please excuse me, dear brother, I was inattentive.

I ordered you to righteousness but did not follow it myself,
It casts us toward its goals, into its misery.
Nor did I straighten up, so my words to you: “Be upright,”

Do not seek to break its appetite through sins;
And the sun of my fortune has always been in decline.

I took no provisions before death of supererogatory deeds,
Do not grant it what it longs for, nor
Nor performed other than the minimum obligation without fasting.

Dragged by my desires to all kinds of sins.

While many destitute people merely resolved to fast
Turn its desire aside, and beware of giving it command;
And endured the pain of empty stomachs stoically,

Desire, whenever it rules, stains or deafens.
Preferring hunger under stones to satiation on cushions.
Unless restrained, the soul wanders,
Without need, the bounties of earth revealed themselves;

Not desiring the riches of others. His poverty sufficed him;

Necessity cannot compel one whose means is the Lord of Might.

Heavenly beings, mankind, jinn and all creation.

He is the foundation of life and the shaping of the living.

He is Muhammad, the select of the Lord of the Throne,
None of us is fixed in a single state:
The noblest of prophets, guide of both worlds and both groups.

Our Prophet whose hand will save us on Judgment Day,
Choose a middle condition in everything, without greed.
The gentlest for us to hope for his intercession.

But the terrors of that day are daunting!
Many a famine is worse than overindulgence.

Guard the soul: how often a soul among us resorted
Gabriel told him: “Arise and warn, reciting in the name of your Lord.”
To forbidden things, repeatedly bending toward them.
He called to Allah, so those who cling to him cling to an unbreakable bond.

And in the hereafter - how dreadful! He is the beloved we hope

With unbelief and tainted religions. His call revived the brilliant sunna
Follow religion and the Judge, and satisfy it.
And abolished the life of unbelief. He informed the corrupt faiths,

Such advice comes from a shameless offender.
Their lies and conjuring manifest. They witnessed wonders on earth

Such beauty was no mere coincidence.
Its image lessens the gaze though undiminished.
So no wonder if, from a horizon [unclear],
None who knew feared him; he who inspires awe was gentle.

He surpassed the prophets in form and character;
But being lofty, he seemed lowly, like the sun appearing tiny.
They did not approach him in forbearance or generosity.
His companions were like stars, the best of peoples,

Their standing in excellence is not diminished,
Simply living, uncaring if hungry, to uphold the religion.
Nor is the spirit withheld from them by the Bountiful.
While the foe was anxious, plotting with any means

Rather, all draw from God's splendor,
And counting its number, unable to break their strength.
And all seek from God's messenger
Your army, O Messenger, knew that numbers alone

They are pearls, and Taha is amid their necklace.

How could it be otherwise? He is God's mystery, His chosen one.
As a lion protects cubs when rivals approach.
His life is a chapter within the whole exposition.

No created being's form resembles his.
But God's words through him out-argued every doubter.
His inward meaning and outward form reached perfection;
How they thought some marvel might overwhelm him,
