عَرَضناwe offered أُنفُساًsouls عَزَّتwere dear عَلَيناto us
وَنَعلَمُand we know أَنَّهاthat they لاnot تُستَهانُare slighted
We offered souls that were dear to us,
We offered ourselves though we were too proud,
And we know they are not to be slighted.
And we know that pride is not to be taken lightly.
وَهانَand sank low نَصيبُهاtheir lot لَمّاwhen تَجَلَّتthey revealed themselves
عَلَيكُمto you فَاِستَخَفَّthen made light بِهاof them الهَوانُhumiliation
And their lot sank low when they revealed themselves
Yet when we appeared before you,
To you; then humiliation made light of them.
Lowliness made light of that pride.
وَلَوand if أَناthat we مَنَعناهاwe withheld them لِعِزَّتٍthey would have kept their dignity
وَكانَتand they were كَيفَماhowever كانَتthey were تُصانُare protected
And had we withheld them, they would have kept their dignity,
Had we withheld ourselves out of pride,
And, whatever their state, they would have been protected.
However she might be, pride would be guarded.
وَماand not كُنّاwe were نَخالُwe imagine لَهاfor them اِمتِهاناًhumiliation
وَلَكِنand yet كُلَّevery مَعروضٍthing offered يُهانُis dishonored
And we had not imagined humiliation for them,
We never thought that she would be disgraced,
And yet everything offered is dishonored.
But whatever is offered is disgraced.
