يَقولونَthey say جاهِداًfight hard ياO جَميلَJamil بِغَزوَةٍon a raid
لِتَكسَبَso that you may earn أَجراًa reward وَالفِخارُand glory يَزيدُincreases
They say, "Fight hard, O Jamil, on a raid,
They say, "O Jamīl, go on a raid,
To earn a reward, while glory grows."
To gain reward and glory!"
فَقُلتُso I said كَفانيsuffice me الغانِياتُthe beauties وَحَربُهاand their warfare
وَأَيُّand what جِهادٍstruggle غَيرَهُنَّother than them أُريدُdo I desire
So I said, "The beauties and their warfare suffice me;
I said, "The singing girls suffice me, warring with them,
And what struggle other than with them would I desire?
What other struggle do I want?"
فَكُلُّfor every حَديتٍconversation بَينَهُنَّamong them بَشاشَةٌdelight
لِمُغرَمٍfor a lovesick man أَلقىlent السَمعَan ear وَهوَwhile he is شَهيدُattentive
For every conversation among them is a delight
So our every conversation among them is delightful,
To a lovesick man who lends an ear, fully attentive.
To a lover who inclines his hearing, though slain.
وَمَنand who ذاthis one الَّذيwho يَأبىrefuses لَدَيهُنَّin their presence حَتفَهُhis death
وَكُلُّand every قَتيلٌslain person بَينَهُنَّamong them شَهيدُa martyr
And who would refuse his death in their presence,
And who refuses his doom before them?
When everyone slain among them is a martyr?"
For every one slain among them is a martyr.
