قالوا لِمَن زَعَمَ المَشيبُ مُتَمِّماً

قالوا لِمَن زَعَمَ المَشيبُ مُتَمِّماً

زَينَ الوَقارِ وَقالَ فيهِ هُراءُ

They said to the one who claimed that gray hair completed

the beauty of dignity, and spoke nonsense about it:

قَسَماً بِمَن خَصَّ الشَبابَ بِنُضرَةٍ

قَسَماً بِمَن خَصَّ الشَبابَ بِنُضرَةٍ

يُرضي رِجالاً حُسنَها وَنِساءُ

يُرضي رِجالاً حُسنَها وَنِساءُ

We swear by Him who endowed youth with freshness,

whose beauty pleases men and women:

لَو أَنَّ لِحيَةً مَن يَشيبُ صَحيفَةٌ

لَو أَنَّ لِحيَةً مَن يَشيبُ صَحيفَةٌ

لِمَعادِهِ لَم يَرضَها بَيضاءُ

لِمَعادِهِ لَم يَرضَها بَيضاءُ

If the beard of one growing gray were a record

for his hereafter, he would not accept it white.
