ظِباءَgazelles of طيبَةٍTayba حَيثُwhere الحُسنَbeauty غايَتُهُits utmost
The beginning of my love, and how it first arose:
At the beginning of my passion and its genesis
the gazelles of Tayba, where beauty reaches its utmost.
A graceful gazelle, the epitome of beauty

وَالقَلبُand the heart خالٌempty فَغَرَّتنيso it beguiled me حَلاوَتُهُits sweetness
Love appeared to me as a state, and I was captivated by it;
And love's state tempted me, so I became infatuated
my heart was empty, and its sweetness beguiled me.
While my heart was empty, so its sweetness seduced me

The one for whom I pined until I tasted no sleep—
And the one I desired until I knew no intimacy
radiance upon radiance: his sight outshone the full moon [reading uncertain].
I experienced intimacy and intimacy under the radiance of its full moon

In loving him, my humiliation became sweet and clear to me;
And in its love my infatuation was sweet to me
in love, it is no marvel that abasement should be sweet.
For love's nature is that its tribulation is pleasurable

Lovely in form, wondrous in his features;
A beautiful, wondrous form, in its features
whether he approaches or gazes, his beauty grows sweeter.
So if he comes near or gazes, his glance is sweet

His countenance showed me the stars in broad daylight,
And I saw him smiling, the stars adorning his cheek
with narcissus above a cheek whose growing-place was lovely.
With a narcissus above a cheek where its growth was beautiful

My fading eyelids grew blood-red with tears [wording uncertain];
And my eyelids flowed with blood instead of tears
the strong one became [unclear], his destruction lamented.
And my powerful self wept over its destruction

How often my reprover persists in words whose import
And how much he blamed me unjustly with continuous
is assent; yet his course departs from fairness.
Words, but his fairness failed in them

As though his heart had been hewn from stone,
It's as if his heart was made of stone
like my hearing, which he set about carving with reproach.
Like my hearing of blame, it started sculpting it

He kept being hostile, to overwhelm me
until his own scheme almost brought him humiliation.
Until when he almost overpowered me with his schemes

He recovered matters and cunningly chose deceit,
And he reconsidered, choosing deception as a means
but grew bewildered once his trick was exposed.
But he hesitated, as soon as his deception appeared

It was no jest when he rose to toy with me;
It wasn't jest when he toyed with me
rather, earnest action lay beyond his power.
Rather, in seriousness, his ability didn't reach

the old man grows youthful; his youth has brought [unclear].
The Sheikh dallied, so his youth contradicted him

I didn't face him with anger, only acceptance
the sound-hearted is unlike one whose inward nature is corrupt.
The healthy isn't like one whose nature corrupted

I possess a resolve whose determination weakens them.
I have the resolve that confused your determination

I fold and unfold pain and praise
for those who wronged me and those whose affection soothed me.
For who did evil and who cherished your friendship

I have disdained to reproach a petty band;
I abstain from blaming the riffraff
its crowds in the assembly—I spoke of his safety [wording unclear].
Whose assembly in the homeland, I said peace to it

I appear, so one who mentions me with evil
in fear, while his heart holds what nearly destroys him.
Bows in fear, and in his heart he scarcely etched it

Love's justice wipes out the reprovers' injustice,
The injustice of flirts, the justice of love destroys it
as dawn's splendor erases the darkness of night.
Like the dawn, it erases the darkness of night with its splendor

And my heart rose like a flowing river, but
its ailment had not promised it recovery.
Its cause wasn't dripping for the valley, its illness

Patience's parts nearly gave way through weakness;
And patience almost lost its components, and here
but for fortitude, borrowing it would offer no hope.
If not for endurance, its borrowing wouldn't return

I isolated myself from others in my love of antelope
from the visiting dream whose coming kindles longing.
Away from the specter whose imaginary bonds ignite ardor

And I chose the star of night in my night chat
rather than a companion whose presence brings the heart no joy.
Over a chatting partner whose company doesn't delight the heart

So how many friends ambiguously show loyalty
an intimate friend whose affection consoles.
Yet he is the intimate whose affection gives delight

I do not equivocate: for him I desire
I don't intend for him except highness that relieves the soul
nothing but an elevation whose loftiness eases the soul.
With its loftiness, his friendship calms the self

Those who said: "Oppress!" I said: "Forbearance returns me"
a day when his worth among people will be revealed to him.
Those who said: "He singled you out," I said: "Wisdom suppresses it"

They said, 'Be domineering.' I said, 'Forbearance holds me back.'
The nature of peaceful approach, its origin
They said, 'He singled you out.' I said, 'Firmness subdues him.'
And one is praised for how well his nature turned out

A disposition whose source is submission's watering-place;
Stinginess of opinion, a strategy that hits
a man praises what pleases his disposition [reading uncertain].

Futility of the mind in all speech is fruitless
then say that his shot misses the target.
And the best saying is hoping for its outcome

the best speech is that whose outcome is hoped for.

Ya-Sin, Ta-Ha, son of Abd Allah, who ennobled
The eye's light, the light of the eye its comfort
his family with ever-increasing loftiness and glory.
The self of integrity, its nature

The source of light, the light of the eye, its delight;
It repeats praise of him, the one who praises him
righteousness itself is his innate nature.
And in praising the most sublime, his wealth
يُرَدِّدُrepeats المَدحَpraise فيهِof him ذوthe possessor of المَديحِpraise لَهُfor him

وَفيand in المَديحِpraise مِنَof الخَلاقِone's allotted share غَنيتُهُhis enrichment
His praiser repeats praise of him;
He sufficed as a spring that quenches the thirsty, so even
his share of praise is his enrichment.
If analogized, we'd say: "The sea is his relation"
فَكَفَّهُso his hand مَنهَلٌa watering-place يَرويquenches العِطاشَthe thirsty وَلَوand if

His hand is a watering-place that quenches the thirsty; if
Through him, the religion of God is completed, we praise Him
comparison were permissible, we would say the sea is his kin.
As the blessing was perfected with Islam, his blessing
بِهِthrough him تُكامِلُyou complete دينَthe religion of اللَهِGod نَحمَدُهُwe praise Him

كَماas اِستَتَمتَwas perfected مَعَwith الإِسلامِIslam نِعمَتُهُHis blessing
Through him you complete God's religion—we praise Him—
No female has birthed his like, nor carried
as His blessing was perfected with Islam.
Nor a peer to him, his purity was perfected
فَلَمso not تَلِدgave birth مِثلَهُto his like أُنثىa woman وَلاand not حَمَلَتconceived

No woman has borne or conceived his like;
To the enlightened, if you compare him, the difference appears
he has no peer: his purity is complete.
Like dawn, its radiance is evident
بِالنَيِّرينَwith the two luminaries إِذاif ماever قَسَتهُyou compared him نَظَراًin sight

If you compare him in your sight with the two luminaries,
How many miracles for him, beyond description appeared
his radiant brow, like morning, reveals the difference to you.
And it's enough what was his testimony
كَمhow many مُعجِزاتٍmiracles لَهُhe has فَوقَbeyond النُهىunderstanding لَمَحَتflashed

How many miracles of his have flashed beyond understanding!
God completed him, and victory was complete for him
His testimony alone suffices for you.
So whoever God opposes, He opposes him

God perfected him, and victory was fully his;
He resembled the full moon, said one whose reports were few
whoever troubles him, the Lord brings to grief.
As the rose's freshness was likened, its bloom
بِالبَدرِto the full moon شَبهُهُlikened him مَنone whose قَلَّwas slight مَخبَرُهُhis insight

One of little insight likens him to the full moon,
His light refused to meet a counterpart
just as his freshness is ascribed to the rose [reading uncertain].
So the moons don't compete with his loftiness

We used to resemble two separated things, so fragrant
his loftiness pays no heed to moons.
