Thanks for the victory—the eye of glory watches over you.

And whom but you does she watch with both her eyes?

For your merit is too well known for us to explain it,

and your character too great for us to rival it.

What shall we say when you have risen?

This is your station—tell me, who can match it?

You are worthy when the highest honors follow you,

and the structures of your house of glory are plain to see.

And so it was: al-Abbas, our lord,

master of noble deeds, whose favors we never lack,

when he saw your lofty worth and all that marked

the virtues that speak sweetly to him of your eminence,

bestowed on you a rank of glory whose splendor you are.

Thus his favor came freely to the one who hoped for it.

And from his presence came a herald to mark its date:

“Gladden Abu al-Nasr; his exalted honors have increased.”

So go forth, be happy, and remain in glory, drinking

the cup of serenity, with convivial warmth ever accompanying it.
