ياO سَيِّديmy master مُصطَفىMustafa ياO خَيرَbest مَنof those who سَعِدَتrejoiced
بِهِthrough him المَعاليlofty honors وَفازَand triumphed المَجدُglory وَالجودُand generosity
O my master Mustafa, O best of those who have gladdened
O my master Mustafa, O the best of those
lofty honors, and through whom glory and generosity have triumphed.
Whose loftiness brought good fortune, and won glory and generosity,
ذَكاكَyour intelligence وَهبيinnate وَقَدand indeed قَواهُstrengthened it ماwhat اَكتَسَبَتacquired
خَلائِقُvirtues قَدرِهاtheir worth فيamong الناسِpeople مَعدودُreckoned
Your intelligence is innate; what you have acquired has strengthened it—
Your intelligence and gift are strong in what they have gained
virtues whose worth among people is acknowledged.
While other people's talents are limited and known,
أَدخَلتَنيyou brought me فيinto بُيوتٍhouses of verse رامَsought ناظِمُهاtheir composer
إِظهارُdisplaying فَضلٍmerit عَلَيهِfor it القَدَرُfate مَحسودُenvied
You brought me into houses of verse whose composer sought
You have brought me into well-constructed houses
to display a merit for which Fate is envied.
Displaying a favor that destiny envies,
حَسناءُbeautiful لَكِنَّهاbut they ضاقَتgrew narrow بِماdespite how رَحُبَتwere spacious
وَكُلُّand every بَيتٍverse-house بِحُسنِby the beauty of السَبكِthe crafting مَوصودُshut fast
Beautiful, yet they grew narrow despite their spaciousness,
Beautiful though it is, it feels cramped by its spaciousness
and every verse is shut fast by the beauty of its crafting.
And every verse is locked in excellent composition,
ماnot كُنتُI was أُقَدِّمُI advance إِنِif اِجتازَcrossed ساحَتَهاtheir courtyard
لَوeven if أَنَّthat فَهميmy understanding بِالإِحسانِfor excellence مَعهودُknown
I would not venture, should I cross their courtyard,
I would not have walked through its courtyard
even if my understanding were known for excellence.
Had my understanding of benevolence been customary,
لَكِنَّنيbut I طاعَةٌobedience لِلأَمرِto the command جُزتُI crossed بِهاthrough them
حَتّىuntil تَبينَbecame clear ماwhat فيwithin النَفسِthe soul مَقصودُintended
But, in obedience to the command, I passed through them,
But obedience to command makes me deserve
until what was intended within the soul became clear.
That the intention in my soul becomes evident,
فَاِسبِلso draw عَلَيَّover me وَمُنشيهاand their composer السِتارَthe veil فَماfor there is no
إِلىto اِمتِداحِكَpraising you حَدٌّa limit ثُمَّthen مَحدودُbounded
So draw the veil over me and their composer, for there is no
So pour upon me and unfold its curtains, for
limit to praising you, nor any fixed bound.
In praising you there is no limit, rather without bound.
