ياO سَيِّدَmaster المُرسَلينَthe messengers أَنّيI am
يا سَيِّدَ المُرسَلينَ أَنّي
مِنof زُمرَةِthe company الأَهلِthe family وَالعَشيرَةِand the clan
مِن زُمرَةِ الأَهلِ وَالعَشيرَةِ
O master of the messengers, I am
O master of messengers, I am
of the company of your family and clan.
Of the tribe of family and kinsfolk
إِلَيكَto you أُعَزّيI trace lineage أَباًa father وَأُمّاًand a mother
إِلَيكَ أُعَزّي أَباً وَأُمّاً
مِنfrom سَيِّدٍa nobleman يَعتَزيtraces his descent لِخَيرَةِto the chosen
مِن سَيِّدٍ يَعتَزي لِخَيرَةِ
To you I trace my lineage through father and mother,
To you I complain of a father and mother
from a nobleman who traces his descent to the chosen.
From a master who boasts of the elite
وَالجَهلُand ignorance لِلغَيِّinto error قَدindeed رَمىcast بيwith me
وَالجَهلُ لِلغَيِّ قَد رَمى بي
وَزادَand increased غَيّيmy waywardness عَمِيَّblindness البَصيرَةِof insight
وَزادَ غَيّي عَمِيَّ البَصيرَةِ
And ignorance has hurled me into error,
Ignorance has cast me with the misguided
and blindness of insight has increased my waywardness.
And increased my misguidance, blind of insight
وَيَعلَمُand knows اللَهُGod قَدرَthe extent ماwhat بيis in me
وَيَعلَمُ اللَهُ قَدرَ ما بي
مِنof هَولِthe terror يَومٍa day اِبتَلاput to the test السَريرَةِthe inmost soul
مِن هَولِ يَومٍ اِبتَلا السَريرَةِ
And God knows the extent of what afflicts me
And God knows the extent of my
from dread of a day that tests the inmost soul.
Horror on a day that tried the conscience
وَحَيثُand since ياO جَدُّgrandfather قُلis scant (reading uncertain) جَدىmy gain (reading uncertain)
وَحَيثُ يا جَدُّ قُل جَدى
وَالنَفسُand the soul كانَتwas إِذاthen غَريرَةِnaive
وَالنَفسُ كانَت إِذا غَريرَةِ
And since, O grandfather, my gain is scant,
And wherever, o grandfather, say sincerity
and the soul was then naive,
While the soul was once capricious
وَقَدand indeed تَلىrecited عَنكُمfrom you حَديثَa saying
وَقَد تَلى عَنكُم حَديثَ
ظَلَّتremained بِهِthrough it عَينُناour eye قَريرَةِat peace
ظَلَّت بِهِ عَينُنا قَريرَةِ
and a saying from you was recited,
And the narrative about you has passed
through which our eyes remained at peace:
Our eyes were tearful from it
مَعناهُits meaning أَولادَكُمyour children جَميعاًall
مَعناهُ أَولادَكُم جَميعاً
أَبناءَsons أَسباطِكَyour grandsons الظَهيرَةِsupportive (wording uncertain)
أَبناءَ أَسباطِكَ الظَهيرَةِ
its meaning: all your children,
Its meaning, your children altogether
the sons of your supportive grandsons—
Sons of your radiant lineage
إِحسانُهُمtheir good deeds عائِدٌreturning عَلَيهِمto them
إِحسانُهُم عائِدٌ عَلَيهِم
وَإِنand if أَساؤاthey do wrong فَلاthen no جَريرَةِguilt
وَإِن أَساؤا فَلا جَريرَةِ
their good deeds accrue to them,
Their benevolence returns to them
and if they do wrong, there is no guilt.
And if they did evil, no wickedness
فَكُنso be شَفيعيmy intercessor وَكُنand be ضَمينيmy guarantor
فَكُن شَفيعي وَكُن ضَميني
مِصداقَin confirmation of أَنبائِكَyour tidings المُنيرَةِilluminating
مِصداقَ أَنبائِكَ المُنيرَةِ
So be my intercessor and be my guarantor,
So be my intercessor and guarantor
in confirmation of your illuminating tidings.
The truth of your enlightening tidings
فَإِنَّماfor only جاهُكَyour standing المُرَجّىlooked to with hope
فَإِنَّما جاهُكَ المُرَجّى
وَلَيسَand there is not ليfor me غَيرَهُother than it ذَخيرَةِa treasure
وَلَيسَ لي غَيرَهُ ذَخيرَةِ
For your standing alone is my hope,
For your eminent position is hoped for
and I have no treasure besides it.
And I have no other store
