ياO مُرادَdesired one النُفوسِthe souls ياO خَيرَbest of خِلٍّa close friend
يا مُرادَ النُفوسِ يا خَيرَ خِلٍّ
زانَadorned بِاللُطفِwith gentleness حِليَةَthe ornament of الأَمجادِglories
زانَ بِاللُطفِ حِليَةَ الأَمجادِ
O desire of souls, O best of friends,
O desire of souls, O best of friends
Who adorned the finery of glory with gentleness.
Adorned with kindness, the jewel of glories
أَشكُرُI thank اللَهَGod قَدindeed رُزِقتُI was blessed بِنَجلٍwith a son
أَشكُرُ اللَهَ قَد رُزِقتُ بِنَجلٍ
أَصبَحَbecame الوَجهُthe face أَيمَنَmost auspicious الميلادِbirth
أَصبَحَ الوَجهُ أَيمَنَ الميلادِ
I thank God: I have been blessed with a son,
I thank Allah, I have been granted a boy
Whose face became most auspicious at birth.
Whose face is auspicious, the best of births
صَومَئيلاًSamuel دَعىcalled لِيَمَنٍfor good fortune سَمىnamed
صَومَئيلاً دَعى لِيَمَنٍ سَمى
فازَgained مِنهُfrom him بِأَيمَنَwith the most auspicious الأَمدادِaid
فازَ مِنهُ بِأَيمَنَ الأَمدادِ
He called him Samuel, naming him for good fortune;
I named him Samuel, for he is a blessing
From him he gained the most auspicious aid.
And from him I gained the best of fortunes
كانَwas فيin الغَيبِthe unseen يَرتَجيhe hopes وَدَعاهُand he called him
كانَ في الغَيبِ يَرتَجي وَدَعاهُ
داعيthe summoner of الخَيرَgoodness فَاِستَجابَso he answered المُناديthe caller
داعي الخَيرَ فَاِستَجابَ المُنادي
He was hoping in the unseen, and was called
He was in the unseen, hoped and prayed
By the herald of good; the caller answered.
The caller of good responded to the caller
وَأَشارَand he indicated البَشيرُthe bearer of glad tidings أَنthat أَرخوهُyou all, record its date
وَأَشارَ البَشيرُ أَن أَرخوهُ
صَموئيلُSamuel لَبّىresponded لِخَيرِto the best of مُراديmy desire
صَموئيلُ لَبّى لِخَيرِ مُرادي
And the bearer of glad tidings suggested that its date be recorded:
And the messenger indicated I should name him
Samuel answered my finest wish.
Samuel obeyed the best of my desires
