بِروحيwith my soul as ransom هَيفاءُslender-waisted المَعاطِفِin bodily contours حُلوَةٌsweet
تَجيءُshe comes فَتَسبيthen she takes captive لِلعُقولِthe minds وَتَذهَبُand departs
My soul be her ransom—a sweet beauty of slender curves.
My spirit's soothed by her sweet cloak
She comes, takes minds captive, and departs.
She comes to steal our minds away
لَهاshe has ريقَةٌsaliva تُشفيheals الصَدىthirst وَمَراشِفٌand lips
تَكادُalmost لاfor (apparent fragment of لأرواح) رَواحَsouls (apparent continuation of لأرواح) المُحِبّينَthe lovers تَشرَبُdrink
Her saliva quenches thirst, and she has lips
Her smile can heal the stony echo
That almost drink the souls of lovers.
Her pillows can our passions sway
لَقَدindeed عَذَّبتَyou tormented (context suggests: they tormented) أَلفاظَهاher words وَصِفاتَهاand her qualities
وَحَسبُكَand enough for you مِنهاof her دُرُّpearls ثَغرٍa mouth مُحَجَّبُveiled
Her words and qualities have indeed brought torment,
You've made her words and traits a torture
And her mouth’s veiled pearls are enough for you.
Though the pearl of her mouth's enough
أَطيبُI delight بِهاin her أُنساًin companionship إِذاwhen ماever (emphasis) رَأَيتُهاI see her
عَلىdespite أَنَّthe fact that قَلبيmy heart فيin هَواهاlove for her مُعَذَّبُis tormented
I delight in her company whenever I see her,
I find her sweetest company
Although my heart is tormented by love for her.
Although for her my heart is rough
تَجاسَرَdared عودُthe lute of اللَهوِmerriment يُشبِهُto resemble صَوتَهاher voice
فَقُلتُso I said مَعاذَrefuge in اللَهُGod إِنif كانَit were يَقرُبُcoming close
The lute of merriment dared to resemble her voice,
The wanton lute dared copy her tone
So I said, “God forbid that it should come close!”
I said "God forbid it sings her tune"
وَلَكِنَّهاbut she أَمسَتcame to تُعاوِدُrepeat مَسَّهُtouching it
وَمِنand for أَجلِthe sake of هَذاthis أَصبَحَbecame العودُthe lute يَطرَبُenraptured
But she began touching it again and again,
But then it mimicked her again
And because of this, the lute became enraptured.
And so the lute has lost its poise
وَأَجرَتand she made flow دُموعَthe tears of العاشِقينَthe lovers بِلُعبِهاthrough her playing
دِماءُblood يُحاكيهاresembles it البَنانُthe fingertips المُخَضَّبُdyed
Through her playing she made the lovers’ tears flow
Her play has spilled the tears of lovers
As blood, mirrored by the dyed fingertips.
As the wine-red anemone
فَقُلتُso I said لَهاto her مَهلاًgently سَفَكَتshe shed (context suggests: you shed) دِماءَناour blood
فَقالَthen said الأَسىsorrow دَعهاlet her تَخوضُwade وَتَلعَبُand play
So I said to her, “Gently! You have shed our blood!”
I said "enough, our blood you've spilled"
Then sorrow said, “Let her wade and play.”
But sorrow said "let playfulness be"
