My master, I appeal to you for your pardon,

For I have burdened myself with a sin against you.

From me came blame and reproach directed at you,

When the coffee arrived, bitter as aloe.

    Then, after this, I remembered

That my drinking the coffee had indeed been an act of patience.

So we sipped it unwillingly, and said

    That in patience—had I known—there is surely a reward.

So pardon us, for the fault is ours alone,

And overlook it, for you have received the excuse.

And if you wish, send us

A kind of coffee; the cash will be sent wrapped and tied.
