Leave me to my own affairs and self-restraint, for I
Leave me be and my affairs, for modesty is my way
melt away whenever [I say] to another, 'Help me.'
I melt away if slain for another's passion in any way
وَقَدand indeed عَزَّنيHe strengthened me بِالقَنعِthrough contentment رَبّيmy Lord لِأَنَّنيbecause I
تَخِذتُI adopted عَفافيmy self-restraint فيin حَياتيmy life دَيدَنيmy habitual practice
And my Lord has strengthened me through contentment, because I
My Lord has honored me with contentment, for my lifelong habit
have made self-restraint my way of life.
Has been to keep my modesty safe throughout my life's span
وَأَصعَبُand harder مَنthan قَطَعِcutting off اليَدَينِboth hands عَلىfor الفَتىthe young man

And harder for a young man than having both hands cut off
And harder than losing both hands for a young man
is begging a base man who scorns you when he [grows rich].
Is a vile request that scorns you when fortune comes your way
وَأَصعَبُand harder مِنهُthan it ذِلَّةًin humiliation وَمَضاضَةًand bitterness

And worse than this in humiliation and bitterness
And harder than that, in humiliation and bitterness
is a benevolent favor received from the hands of a base man.
Is accepting a kind deed from the hand of a lowly man
