I will not forget a day at a gathering of good company,
I will never forget a day of intimate gathering
Where a number of close friends were present,
Among friends of select number

And cups of wine were passed around among us
Cups of wine passed round
By a handsome one—after seeing him, look not at the sun.
So pure no eye could see their like again

A bān-tree bough crowned with blossoms,
A branch of unrivalled beauty
The rose is ashamed to rival his cheek.
Its blossoms shaming roses' pride

With eyes whose blackness causes melancholy—
With eyes so darkly bright
So Hippocrates deemed it in his studies.
In learned debate none could him chide

Lofty in spirit, gentle by nature, slender of waist,
Refined of meaning, graceful of form
And, in short, he has robbed the mind of its good sense.
His perfection sense and reason did confide
وَرِثَhe inherited الحُسنَbeauty عَنfrom بَديعِwondrous جَمالِbeauty

He inherited beauty from one wondrously fair,
Inheriting beauty from perfect beauty
Perfect in qualities, pure in affection.
Flawless in his qualities, pure in his affection

So we enjoyed every subtle delight,
We enjoyed every subtle meaning
And song that makes the worshipper forget his litany.
And voice that made the glorifiers forget their litany

A gathering that resembled a garden of flowers,
A gathering that resembled a garden of flowers
Amid roses and narcissi that adorned its necklace.
Among roses and narcissi arranged
غَيرَexcept أَنَّthat الرَقيبَthe watcher جاءَcame عَلَيناupon us
حَسبُهُsufficient for him اللَهُGod لَوif only تَخَلَّفَhe had delayed مَدَّهa while
But the watcher came upon us;
But for the supervisor who came upon us
May God deal with him! If only he had delayed a while.
God judge him - better had he delayed
فَلَبِثناso we stayed هَنيهَةًa little while ثُمَّthen قُمناwe rose
وَاِنصَرَفناand we departed وَالمُلكُand dominion لِلَهِto God وَحدَهHim alone
So we stayed a little while, then rose,
For a while we remained, then we stood
And we departed—and dominion belongs to God alone.
And left, for to God alone belongs the Kingdom
