مَنthe one who كانَwas عَهديmy knowledge بِهِof him أَوفىmost faithful أَخِلّائيmy close friends
I reproached—for reproach offers greater hope in affection—
the one I had known as the most faithful of my close friends,
إِذاwhen قَدhad بَلَوتُI tested لَهُfor him فيin شِدَّةٍa hardship حَصَلَتbefell
كادَتnearly تُمَزِّقُtear apart أَعضائيmy limbs وَأَحشائيand my entrails
when I put him to the test in a hardship that befell me,
one that nearly tore apart my limbs and my entrails.
وَكُنتُand I was أَحسَبُI supposed ماwhat يَشتَدُّintensifies مَنof أَلمىmy pain

And I thought that the worsening of my pain
would weigh on him if he saw me,
وَأَنَّهُand that he سَوفَwould يَأتينيhe comes to me وَيَنظُرُنيand sees me
شَأنَthe manner of المُحِبينَthose who love كَيso that أَبراI recover مِنَfrom الداءِthe illness
and that he would come to me and look in on me,
as loving friends do, so I might recover from the illness,

or at least inquire after me from afar,
so he would know whether I was dead or alive.
فَلَمso did not يَكُنoccur ذاكَthat أَوor هَذاthis وَلاand no أَثَرtrace
مِنof ذَلِكَthat الخِلُّclose friend ياO حَزَنيmy sorrow وَإيذائيand my hurt
So neither that nor this happened, nor was there any trace
of that close friend—oh, my sorrow and my hurt!
وَعُذرُهُand his excuse كانَwas إِنthat قَدhad فاتَescaped فِكرَتُهُhis mind

And his excuse was that it had slipped his mind—
the matter of asking. What a fine excuse: distraction!
وَهَلand can يَفوتُescape مُحِبّاًone who loves ذِكرَthe remembrance of صاحِبِهِhis companion
فيin شِدَّةِthe severity of اليَأسِdespair مِنfrom باسٍdistress وَلِأَواءِand hardship
And can the thought of his companion escape one who loves,
in deep despair brought on by distress and hardship?
لاno وَالَّذيby Him who حَبَّبَmade dear الحُسنيgoodness لِكُلِّto every وَفٍfaithful person
وَهَيَّأَand fashioned الحُبُّlove مِنfrom حاءٍthe letter ḥāʾ وَمِنand from باءِthe letter bāʾ
No, by Him who made goodness dear to every faithful person,
and fashioned love from a ḥāʾ and a bāʾ!
لَكِنَّهُbut it is الدَهرtime مِسبارٌa probe يَجِسُprobes بِهِwith it
غَورَthe depth of الجُروحِthe wounds وَماand what فيin البِئرِthe well مِنof ماءِwater
But time is a probe with which one gauges
the depth of wounds and whatever water lies in the well.
فَالصَبرُso patience حَسبيenough for me وَيَعفوand may forgive اللَهَGod عَنكَyou, in forgiveness أَخيmy brother
فَإِنَّfor indeed وُدّيmy affection دانٍnear رَغمَdespite أَقصائيmy exclusion
So patience suffices me; may God forgive you, my brother,
for my affection stays near, despite my being cast aside.
