دَعَوتُI prayed to اللَهُGod أَنthat تَسموyou rise وَتَعلُوَand rise high
لِيَذهَبَso that it might cease فيin زَمانِكُمyour time عَنائيmy suffering
I prayed to God that you might rise and soar,
I prayed to God that you may rise and ascend
So that my suffering might cease in your time.
So my troubles may vanish in your time
فَلَمand did not يَلبَثdelay مَقامُكَyour station إِنif تَعالىrose high
عُلُوَّthe height of النَجمِthe star فيin أُفقِthe horizon of الضِياءِlight
And your station was quick to rise
Yet no sooner did you rise to the heights
To the star's height on the horizon of light.
Than the star in the glowing horizon
فَلَمّاthen when أَنthat عَلَوتَyou rose بَعُدتَyou grew distant عَنّيfrom me
وَأَذهَلَكَand distracted you التَرَفُّعُhaughtiness عَنfrom وَلائيmy loyalty
But when you rose, you grew distant from me,
When you rose aloft you drifted away from me
And haughtiness made you forget my loyalty.
And being aloof made you forget my allegiance
وَإِذاand when حُزتَyou won القُبولَacceptance وَخابَand failed خَطّيmy writing
فَكانَso it was إِذاthen عَلىagainst نَفسيmyself دُعائيmy prayer
And when you won acceptance and my writing failed,
Now though spurned, still my hopes do not faded
My prayer, then, was against myself.
For my prayers are still for my own soul
