سَأَلتُهُI asked him التَقبيلَkissing فيon خَدِّهِhis cheek
كَمa few قُبلَةًa kiss مِنfrom بَعدِafter طولِlength الغِيابِthe absence
I asked him to let me kiss his cheek—
I asked him for a kiss on his cheek
A few kisses after so long an absence.
How many kisses after long absence
فَقالَso he said كَمhow many تَرجوyou hope for فَقُلتُso I said أَعطِنيgive me
عَشراًten وَماand whatever زادَexceeds يَكونُwill be اِحتِسابِa voluntary offering
He said, “How many do you hope for?” I said, “Give me
He said, how many do you want? I said
Ten, and let any extra be freely given.”
Ten, and whatever more is a bonus
وَمُذand when تَعانَقناwe embraced وَقَبَّلتُهُand I kissed him
عَدَدتُI counted لِلسَبعِto seven بِغَيرِwithout اِتِيابِhesitation (reading uncertain)
And when we embraced and I kissed him,
Since we embraced and I kissed him
I counted to seven without hesitation.
I counted up to seven without hesitation
وَقَبلَand before أَنthat آتيI come عَلىto تِسعَةٍnine
غَلِطتُI erred فيin العَدِّthe counting وَضاعَand was lost الحِسابِthe tally
And before I reached nine,
And before reaching nine
I erred in counting, and the tally was lost.
I lost count, and the tally was lost
