I left my heart’s beloved, not because of reproach,

nor for fear of the bow of his Turkish brow.

And I would not have ceased loving him, however long his absence,

but he committed a sin that leads to abandonment.

He wanted a partner in the love between us,

although I had thought him my angel.

And how could I accept a partner in loving him,

when my heart’s faith does not incline toward polytheism?
