Estrangement—my heart [knows] its variations and meanings.
For its meanings are not hidden from my mind.
وَالطَبعُand nature لِلمَرءِfor a person أَصلٌa root فيin غَريزَتِهِhis instinct
وَماand not التَطَبُّعُacquired disposition بِالتَقليدِthrough imitation يُغنيهِavails him
A person's nature is rooted in his instinct,
and an imitated disposition does him no good.
كُنّاwe were كَغَصنَينِlike two branches بَلrather غُصنُتُطعِمُa branch you nourish مِنfrom

حُسنِthe beauty of الجَميلِthe fair one بِإِحسانٍwith kindness يُحاكيهِmatches it
We were like two branches—rather, a branch you nourish from
the fair one's beauty, with kindness that matches it.
نَماit grew وَأَثمَرَand bore fruit إِقبالاًin warmth وَحُسنٌand beauty وَلاand not
وَلاand not نَزالُwe cease بِصافيwith pure الوُدِّaffection نَسقيهِwe water it
It grew and bore fruit in warmth and beauty—and still—
and still we water it with pure affection.
وَقَدand indeed أَراهُI see it وَقاكَmay He protect you اللَهُGod قَدalready عَبَثتَhave tampered
أَيديhands الذُبولِof withering بِماwith what يَثنيbends مَباديهِits beginnings
And I see it—may God protect you—already tampered with
by withering's hands, bending its first growth.
قَطَعتُI cut off عَنّيfrom myself الجَنىthe fruit قُرباًcloseness وَمَسئِلَةًand inquiry
وَماand not رَحِمتُI showed mercy فُؤاداًa heart تَستَويyou dwell فيهِin it
I cut myself off from the fruit of closeness and inquiry,
and showed no mercy to a heart in which you dwell.
تَأتيyou come وَتَرجِعُand return لاnot تَلويyou turn aside عَلىin عِجلِhaste
وَلَمand not تَقسِنيyou measured me بِدُوارِagainst a house سَتَبنيهِyou will build it
You come and go in haste, without turning aside,
nor did you measure me against a house you will build.
وَهَبand suppose لَكَfor you العُذرَthe excuse هَلّاwhy not فُرصَةٌan opportunity سَنَحَتarose
لاno بُدَّescape مِنfrom سَبَبٍa cause لِلعَزمِfor resolve يُثنيهِturns it aside
Granted you have an excuse—did no opportunity arise?
There must be some cause that turns resolve aside.
قَدindeed قارَبَhas approached الشَهرَa month لَمnot أَخطُرI come to mind بِفِكرَتِكُمin your thoughts
لَولاbut for الحِكِمدارَthe commandant إِذاwhen أَوماhe gestured بِتَنبيهِwith a reminder
Nearly a month has passed without my crossing your mind,
but for the commandant, when he signaled a reminder.
فَكُنso be كَماas شِئتَyou wish لَكِنbut لاdo not تَغرُرdeceive بيwith me
وَلاand do not تَغرُbe deceived مِنَby الأَعداthe enemies بِتَمويهِthrough deception
So be as you wish, but do not deceive me,
nor be taken in by enemies' deception.
فَلَستُfor I am not أَوَّلَthe first مَنsomeone who مالَتhave turned عَواطِفُهُhis feelings
عَنِaway from الوِدادِaffection بِحُكمِby the dictates of الطَبعِnature وَالتيهِand pride
For I am not the first whose feelings have turned
away from affection, at the bidding of nature and pride.
وَالقَلبُand the heart صارَhas become إِذاwhen ماever السَهمُthe arrow حَلُّlodges بِهِin it
تَكسِرُbreaks النَصلَthe arrowhead مِنfrom نَصلٍa blade يُباريهِrivals it
And the heart has become such that, whenever an arrow lodges in it,
the arrowhead shatters against a blade that rivals it.
وَالحَمدُand praise لِلَهِbe to God أَنَّthat الدَهرَtime جَرَّدَنيhas stripped me
مِنof كُلِّevery خِلٍّfriend يُوافينيvisits me وَأوفيهِand I give him his due
And praise be to God that time has stripped me
of every friend who visits me and to whom I give his due,
كَيلاso as not to أُخالِفُI contradict قَولَthe saying of السابِقينَthose who came before بِماconcerning what
قَدalready استَحالواthey have become وَيَكفيand suffices القَلبَthe heart ماwhat فيهِis within it
lest I contradict the words of those before us concerning what
they have become; the heart has enough within it.
ثُمَّthen السَلامُpeace إِلىto عَلياكَyour exalted self أَتبَعُهُI follow it
مِنَof الدُعاءِsupplication بِماfor what الرَحمَنُthe Most Merciful يوليهِHe bestows it
Then peace to your exalted self; I follow it
with prayers for what the Most Merciful bestows.
