أَضَعتُI squandered شَبابيmy youth وَماليand my wealth سُدىًin vain
أَضَعتُ شَبابي وَمالي سُدىً
عَلىon حُبِّlove for ظَبيٍa gazelle بَديعَwondrous in الجَمالِbeauty
عَلى حُبِّ ظَبيٍ بَديعَ الجَمالِ
I squandered my youth and wealth in vain,
I squandered my youth and wealth in vain
for love of a gazelle of exquisite beauty,
On love for a gazelle of wondrous beauty,
لَكَيلاso that ... not يَميلَhe inclines لِغَيريtoward someone other than me هَوىًin love
لَكَيلا يَميلَ لِغَيري هَوىً
فَضاعَso was wasted شَبابٌyouth عَلَيهِon him وَمالِand wealth
فَضاعَ شَبابٌ عَلَيهِ وَمالِ
lest my love turn toward anyone but me;
So he would not turn in love to anyone but me—
thus both were lost—my youth spent on him, and my wealth.
And so youth and wealth were wasted on him.
