أَيَرقَعُdoes he patch over? مَنظَرَthe visible face of المِرآةِthe mirror عَنهُfrom him
إِذاwhen هُوَhe أَمَّهاapproaches it بِالراحَتَينِwith both palms
Can he patch over the mirror’s face to hide it from himself
when he approaches it with both palms?
وَاِحجِبand veil وَجهَهُhis face كَيلاlest يَراهاhe see it
مَخافَةًfor fear إِنif تَثنيهِit doubles him لِعَينيbefore my eye
And veil his face, lest he see it,
for fear it might double him before my eye.
أُقاسيI suffer ماwhat أُقاسيI suffer وَهوَwhile he is فَذُّone alone
أَشبَهَهُI liken him بِخَيرِto the finer of النَيرَينِthe two luminaries
I suffer what I suffer while he is but one;
I liken him to the finer of the two luminaries.
وَلاand not أَقوىI can bear عَلىto مَرأىthe sight of سَناهُhis radiance
فَكَيفَhow then إِذاif تُبديit reveals فَرقَدَينِtwo Farqad stars
And I cannot bear the sight of his radiance—
how then, if it reveals two Farqad stars?
