أَظُنُّI think أَباAbu (father of) الفَضلِal-Fadl (bounty) عَلَيناtoward us اَبىhas refused الفَضلاbounty
وَبِالغيدِand by the graceful beauties آلىhe swore لاnot يُقارِبَناcome near us أَصلاat all
I think Abu al-Fadl has denied us his bounty,
And sworn by the graceful beauties never to come near us at all.
جَفاناhe shunned us بِأَجفانٍfor eyelids يَهيمُhe is enraptured بِلَحظِهاby their glances
وَيَخشىand he fears قَسِيّاًbows فَوقَهاabove them رَسَمتُI drew نَبلاarrows
He has shunned us for eyelids whose glances enrapture him,
And fears bows above which I have drawn arrows.
وَجناتُand gardens وَجناتٍof cheeks أَحاطَencircled بِوَردِهاaround their roses
نَباتُgrowth عِذارٍof cheek-down جَلَّexalted is مُبدَعَهُits maker شَكلاin form
And gardens of cheeks, whose roses are encircled
By sprouting cheek-down—glory to its maker for such a form!
وَأَعطافُand supple forms مِردانَof beardless youths تَسيلُflow لَطافَةًwith delicacy
كَأَغصانِlike branches بُستانٍof a garden تَميلُsway بِهِwithin it مَيلاwith a swaying motion
And the supple forms of beardless youths, flowing with grace,
Like branches of a garden, swaying within it.
فَكَيفَhow, then اِحتِياليmy stratagem ذاthis فيin لِقائِهِmeeting him
وَدونَand before لِقائِهِmeeting him ماwhat أَشيبُI turn gray بِهِbecause of it هَولاfrom terror
How, then, can this stratagem of mine secure a meeting with him,
When before that meeting lies what turns my hair gray with terror?
فَإِنthen if قُلتُI say روميseek مِنهُfrom him ياO نَفسُsoul زَرَّرةَunclear; perhaps 'a visit'
يُعارِضُنيconfronts me روميa Rumi (Roman/Byzantine) بِسَيفٍwith a sword لَهُof his سَلاhe unsheathed
If I say, "My soul, seek [a visit?] from him,"
A Rumi confronts me with a sword he has drawn.
وَإِنand if قُلتُI say توبيrepent مِنof هَواهُlonging for him وَحُبُّهُand love for him
يُعاوِدُنيreturns to me غَيّيmy waywardness فَاِستَحمَلَso I endure الذُلّاhumiliation
And if I say, "Repent of longing and love for him,"
My waywardness returns to me, and so I endure humiliation.
