O reproacher, who wrongfully blamed me for sleeplessness,

and never saw the one for whose sake I spurned sleep out of passion,

before you immerse yourself unjustly in this reproach,

turn aside to the beloved’s sanctuary, secluded in devotion,

in beauty’s Kaaba, and excuse my wakefulness.

And make al-Safa your heart’s desire, if you wish to rejoice,

facing a house whose precincts blaze with fragrance.

And leave Suhayl veering aside with Mars,

and look at the mole above the cheek, beneath the darkness:

you will find Bilal watching for dawn in the hour before daybreak.
