لَمّاwhen تَمادىhe persisted عَلىin بِعاديmy estrangement
وَاِشمَتِand made others gloat الصَحبَthe friends وَالأَعاديand the enemies
When he persisted in shunning me,
and made friends and foes gloat,
وَشَردُand drove away النَومِsleep مِنfrom عُيونيmy eyes
وَاِضرِمِand kindled النارَthe fire فيin فُؤاديmy heart
and drove sleep from my eyes,
and kindled fire in my heart,
وَلَمand did not أَجِدI find مِنfrom هَواهُlove for him بَداany escape
وَالوَجدُand longing مازالَcontinued فيin اِزدِيادِincrease
and I found no escape from loving him,
while longing kept increasing,
فَلاso no سَبيلاًway إِلىto خَلاصيmy deliverance
وَلاand no مَعيناًhelper عَلىagainst السُهّادِsleeplessness
with no path to my deliverance
and no helper against sleeplessness,
حَمَلتُI compelled نَفسيmyself عَلىto وُقوفيmy standing
بِالقُربِnear مِنto دارِهِhis house أُناديI call out
I forced myself to stand
near his house, calling out.
وَمِنand from جَوايَmy burning anguish حَمَلتُI charged قَهراunder compulsion
بِبابِهِat his door حَملَةَthe charge الجَوادِof the steed
And my anguish drove me to charge
at his door like a charging steed.
فَطارَso it flew مِنfrom بَعضِsome نارِfire قَلبيof my heart
وَقَدand already تَنَهَّدتُI had sighed كَاِعتِياديas was my habit
So from some of my heart's fire there flew—
as I had sighed in my usual way—
جُزءٌa fragment عَلىonto الدارِthe house مِنof شَواظِsmokeless flame
أَقُلsmaller فيin الوَصفِdescription مِنthan زِنادِa fire-striker
onto the house a fragment of smokeless flame,
smaller, to describe it, than a fire-striker.
فَأَحرَقَso it burned البابَthe door دونَwithout عِلميmy knowledge
بِغَيرِwithout قَصدٍintent وَلاnor اِرتِياديmy seeking it
It burned the door without my knowing,
without intent or any design of mine.
فَهَلso, is it مِنَof العَدلِjustice أَنthat أُجازيI be punished
وَلَمand not يَكُنwas ذاكَthat مِنof مُراديmy intention
Is it just, then, that I be punished,
when that was not my intention?
