أَعياكَproved too much for you إِسعافيhelping me فَصِرتَso you became مَعنَفيmy reproacher
لِيكونَso that it might be عُنفُكَyour harshness عَنfrom مُراديmy desire حائِلاa barrier
Coming to my aid proved too much for you, so you became my reproacher,
Helping me proved too much for you, so you became my reproacher,
so that, through your harshness, you might stand between me and my desire.
So that your harshness might bar me from my desire.
لَمِنَsurely of المُروءَةِnobility of character أَنto تَزيدَyou increase بَلِيَّتيmy affliction
لَيتَif only الَّذيthe one who عَدِمَlacked الجَميلَkindness تَجمَلاacted graciously
Is it noble conduct to add to my affliction?
It is surely noble of you to add to my affliction!
If only the one bereft of graciousness had at least affected it.
Would that he who lacked kindness had acted graciously.
ماwhat ليwith me إِلَيكَto you شَكَوتُI complained نارَfire جَوانِحيmy ribs
لِتَكونَso that you might be مُطفِئُهاits extinguisher فَكُنتَyet you were المُشعِلاthe kindler
Why did I complain to you of the fire within my breast,
Why did I complain to you of the fire within my breast,
that you might be its quencher—yet you became its kindler?
That you might quench it—yet you were the kindler?
