هاbehold هُوَit الدَمعُthe tears فيin المَحاجِرِthe eye sockets سائِلِflowing
ها هُوَ الدَمعُ في المَحاجِرِ سائِلِ
وَإِلىand toward الصَبرُpatience لَمnot تعُدremain مِنany وَسائِلِmeans
وَإِلى الصَبرُ لَم تعُد مِن وَسائِلِ
Behold, tears are flowing within the eyes,
Behold, tears are flowing in the eye sockets.
and no means of reaching patience remains.
And no means of attaining patience remain.
وَقَدand indeed اِنشَقَّتburst المَرائِرُthe gallbladders لَمّاwhen
وَقَد اِنشَقَّت المَرائِرُ لَمّا
شَقَّتِopened الأَرضُthe earth لِلحَبيبِfor the beloved المُزايِلِdeparting
شَقَّتِ الأَرضُ لِلحَبيبِ المُزايِلِ
Our very innards burst when
And the gallbladders burst when
the earth cleft open entrances for the beloved.
The earth opened for the departing beloved.
غابَvanished فيهwithin it عَنِfrom الحُضورِpresence وَلَكِنbut
غابَ فيه عَنِ الحُضورِ وَلَكِن
بَينَamong تِلكَthose الصُدورُbreasts ماwhat أَلِفَكَknew you ماثِلِpresent
بَينَ تِلكَ الصُدورُ ما أَلِفَكَ ماثِلِ
Therein he vanished from those present, yet
He vanished within it from our presence, yet
among those hearts, all that was familiar with you stands present.
Among those breasts, what knew you remains present.
لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge رَوضَthe garden الحَياةِof life أَيَدريdoes it know?
لَيتَ شِعري رَوضَ الحَياةِ أَيَدري
أَيُّwhich غُصنٍbranch بِالأَمسِyesterday قَدalready باتَbecame ذابِلِwithered
أَيُّ غُصنٍ بِالأَمسِ قَد باتَ ذابِلِ
Would that I knew—does the garden of life know
Would that I knew: does the garden of life know
which branch, only yesterday, became withered?
Which branch had become withered yesterday?
وَيحَalas ياO دَهرُTime قَدindeed تَعَجَّلَتyou hastened فيهِconcerning him
وَيحَ يا دَهرُ قَد تَعَجَّلَت فيهِ
أَوor لِماfor what قَضَيتُI decreed كُنتَyou were تُطاوِلِdelaying
أَو لِما قَضَيتُ كُنتَ تُطاوِلِ
Woe indeed, O Time—you hastened against him;
Alas, O Time, you have been hasty with him,
or, once you had passed your decree, did you linger long?
Or were you delaying what I decreed?
قَدindeed غَدَوناwe have become بِنارِهِin his fire نَتَلَظّىwe burn
قَد غَدَونا بِنارِهِ نَتَلَظّى
وَهوَwhile he فيin الخُلدِeternity ناعِمٌat ease غَيرَnot سائِلِasking
وَهوَ في الخُلدِ ناعِمٌ غَيرَ سائِلِ
Now we burn fiercely in its fire,
We have come to burn in his fire,
while he rests at ease in eternity, needing to ask for nothing:
While he is at ease in eternity, asking nothing,
بَينَamong حورٍhouris وَبَينَand among وِلدانٍyoung boys حُسنِbeautiful
بَينَ حورٍ وَبَينَ وِلدانٍ حُسنِ
وَجَنانِand gardens نَعيمِهاtheir bliss غَيرَnot زائِلِfading
وَجَنانِ نَعيمِها غَيرَ زائِلِ
among houris and beautiful youths,
Among houris and among beautiful youths,
and gardens whose bliss never fades;
And gardens whose bliss never fades,
وَثِمارٌand fruits قُطوفُهاtheir clusters دانِياتٌwithin reach
وَثِمارٌ قُطوفُها دانِياتٌ
وَشَرابٌand drink مِنَof الرَحيقِpure wine مَناهِلِdrinking springs
وَشَرابٌ مِنَ الرَحيقِ مَناهِلِ
with fruits whose clusters are drawn near,
And fruits whose clusters are close at hand,
and drinking-founts of pure nectar.
And drink of pure wine from springs.
رَبِّmy Lord فَاِجعَلso make مَثهواهُhis abode جَنّاتِgardens عَدنِof Eden
رَبِّ فَاِجعَل مَثهواهُ جَنّاتِ عَدنِ
وَلِأَهليهِand to his family مِنكَfrom You بِاللُطفِwith kindness واصِلِcontinue
وَلِأَهليهِ مِنكَ بِاللُطفِ واصِلِ
Lord, make the Gardens of Eden his abode,
My Lord, make his abode the Gardens of Eden,
and let Your gentle kindness reach his family.
And continue to bestow Your kindness on his family.
وَبَشيرُand the herald الرُضوانِof divine favor قَدindeed قالَhas said اِرخِmark the date
وَبَشيرُ الرُضوانِ قَد قالَ اِرخِ
جاءَhas come فيin عَدنِEden حَظِّthe portion of مَحمودٍMahmoud كامِلِKamil
جاءَ في عَدنِ حَظِّ مَحمودٍ كامِلِ
The herald of divine favor has said, “Reckon its date:
And the herald of divine favor has said: mark the date—
In Eden, Mahmūd’s fortune has come complete.”
In Eden has come the portion of Mahmoud Kamil.
